cheap batteries

you have got to be kidding us. How many stores do you think Cosco has and how much merch do you think they move? You don't think they they have more buying power than a small website? My guess is they, battery junction, accept a much smaller markup on their product to be able to give us the good prices they do but you also think they should be able to beat the price of a special buy in a bulk mega-store?

I'd be tempted to ask "why not?" but that won't explain much.
Realistically, a web store proprietor is not going to have the buying power that a volume buyer like Costco is going to have, and cannot operate on the same minimal profit margins that Costco operates at. It's pretty much the same reason that you'd pay more for an item at a mom&pop store that is operated by local citizens than you would pay at your local mega-mart.

But to use another example with resources that are local to you, Safeway and Albertsons are both in the business of selling food. Are the prices for groceries on a per unit basis less at Costco?

While I'm not sure why you found the need to buy AA batteries by mail-order, if you haven't opened that pack of Duracells from Costco (or even if you have,) you might want to also check out the information on the Kirkland AA alkaline batteries that Costco sells for 20¢ each. If you're after cheap good quality AA batteries, the Kirklands might be a better choice for you.

I didn't expect A website that's geared towards batteries to be more expensive than costco. can someone explain?

That was not being an ***. The question just seemed strange like a halfway jeer that the retailer did not deserve. I said so. No insult no name calling.....except by you.
