Cheap LSD NiMH from Hobby City - Turnigy AA 2200 mAh

Re: Cheap LSD NiMH from Hobby City

That is a very good price. If I was placing an order with these folks I would throw some in.

Hm... I don't know. Hobby City's shipping is really expensive (by weight too!). The 2200mAh rating is suspicious, since even Eneloops aren't that good.

Re: Cheap LSD NiMH from Hobby City

There are some Targus LSD NMH batteries at Target that say they are 2200 mAh. Since neither are name brands I would be somewhat suspicious of their ratings.

True, but this kind of items are usually used to fill up postage weight. There is option for International Air Mail ($79 limit) and 250 g max. weight for 5.95 USD. That way you can get 7 cells for 2.14 USD per piece.

Re: Cheap LSD NiMH from Hobby City

Interesting cell...

It bears the Turnigy brand and the capacity is guaranteed by HobbyCity:

...

We guarantee our cells are true to their capacity!

Sadly battery marketing is an evil game, with overstated capacity being the industry norm. Generally speaking, battery factories will suggest vendors to overstate the capacity by at least 30%, marking 1800mAh cells with 2300mAh labels or more!

While this might work for toy stores, such marketing tactics wouldn't survive 1 week in our store with customer feedbacks and reviews, and thats why we guarantee our Turnigy 2200mAh NiMH cells to be at least 2200mAh!
It doesn't state where it's manufactured, but the claim that it will not lose more than 30% of its charge after one year indicates it's probably made in China.

Considering the reputable source, I don't think there is excessive risk in ordering a few for assessment. Should anyone do so, some close-up images could be helpful in determining its linage.

Hrvoje, it might be advisable to amend the title of the first post to include the cell's brand name and capacity. It would make it easier for others who purchase or may wish to purchase the cell to locate this thread and perhaps add their comments as well.

If I recall, BatteryJunction is selling RayOVac LSD cells very very cheap as a part of BlackFriday promotion. Those cells are marked as 2300mAh so I do suspect the claim of low self-discharge.

I bought 7 of these batteries to test out. Here are some pictures that may provide some clues to their lineage.

Each were packaged in separate bags:

Break-in results with the Maha c9000 coming in a few days.

Ok, I've got some numbers to report. Initial capacities out of the bags with a discharge rate of 500mA were:

1. 1236 mAh
2. 1210 mAh
3. 1196 mAh
4. 986 mAh

After using the break-in mode on the maha c9000, these were the capacities:

1. 2257 mAh
2. 2258 mAh
3. 2240 mAh
4. 2265 mAh

At least we now know the advertised capacity is what we'll get with these batteries. As for the LSD part, we'll just have to wait and see.

There are 2500 mAh LSD batteries from Ansmann. I ordered some from ThomasDistributing for around $11 per 4-pack. I am going through break-in right now so I'll update with capacities upon charging. I didn't note capacities out of the 1st box but no worry I bought 4 sets so will posts those too.

Has anyone done or seen a test of the LSD characteristic of the Turnigy? Obviously this takes time but it seems they have been available for at least 9 months so there could be tests e.g. after 6 months. From all I've read, it appears these are probably rebranded GP ReCycko cells which would suggest they are really low self discharge but it would be interesting to see some actual tests.

Cheers

+1 I'd love to know how well these hold up!

Edit:
I found this, and they seem to be okay with long-term storage.
