Click on head lamps (over to the lower left)...Scroll down toward the bottom of the page www.caves.org/imo/frames1.htm

I found this link while following the link by our new member, Phlashlight.

I have always had an interest in carbide lamps but I think the possibility of finding calcium carbide in the local area would rival most hard to find batteries. The most interesting setup I have come across is the "petzl explorer" if I find a supplier of calcium carbide in the Detroit area I may have to tell the wife that I need another light.

How bright are carbide lights? What if any is there down sides? One I can think of might be getting burned, are they dangerous?

If I remember right, carbide lamps form acetylene from the reaction of calcium carbide and water.

The flame is extremely hot, white hot. I think there is some heat hazard if the piece is not very well engineered.
