24 buildings in this city are connected by 5 watt DPSS lasers. I think that would be a cool city to live in at night.

Also, all of these images are from Omicron Laserage which is a great company, and you can check out their website here.

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

but... WHY are they connected? Is it just decoration? Is it a data link where it's hard or impossible to pull cables? (why not use a little dish or 2.4ghz system? Much cheaper!) looks cool though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

The city is Lübeck in Germany.

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

NYC is the city of lights, this is the city of lasers. Ok, maybe it is the "city of coherent, monochromatic, focused light".
Wonka, let us guess. I'm going to say Frankfurt

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

Wow those pics are great.

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

"The permanent installation called "Lübeck – City of Light" has a symbolic character and indicates that any enduring urban world such as the city of Lübeck lives on the permanent interconnection of cultural traditions and technological innovations."

"The special optical system also changes the diameter of the beam, which results in an improved visibility of the laser beam in the air."

according to jim morrison, la woman, los angelas is the city of lights.

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

The lasers in the pictures are there to be visually aesthetic only, they don't really serve any other functional purpose. The beams span between the large buildings in the town.

I am not sure what kind of lasers are used for data communication in comozo's link, but the university in the article has nothing to do with the pictures that I posted.

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

Great pic's Wonka /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/happy14.gif

I'm moving to Lübeck, Germany!

EDIT: Do they use mirror to reflect the beams or or are they individual lasers?

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

24 individual 5 Watt (not 5mW) lasers

Re: City of Lights - WARNING - tons of laser pics.

Also, for those of you familiar with Coherent Scientific Laser products, there is a robotic processing plant in Lübeck where Coherent's lasers are manufactured. (Although Coherent lasers are also produced in Santa Clara, CA, the only robotic plant is in Lübeck Germany)

All of the lasers in Lübeck run horizontally, and terminate on other buildings. No stray beams going out into the sky.

Take a look at the laser units where they are installed in these old brick buildings. The laser light is transmitted from the "laser beam generator base" to the particular terminals through high-speed quartz glass fibres featuring a loss rate of 8 – 10% due to reflection-borne losses or due to absorption. The terminals channel the laser light to the output mirrors through special torsion-free fixtures and conductors.

"According to some random astronought doing a fly-over, Perth is the City of Lights also..."

I suspect there are numerous more false claims to take Perth's shine away... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
