De-lurk post concerning the various flavors of Fellowes WriteRight.

When I first tried WriteRight on my lights I was underwhelmed to say the least. It had a very slight orange-peel texture that took three layers to even start to even the beam (????) Then I saw Chris M's picture – what’s that grid pattern? Gromit - I've got the Wrong WriteRight!

A visit to the Fellowes web site produced the FAQ item that told all. "Why do the WriteRight Screen Protectors for color screens lack the textured surface?" (makes 'em too fuzzy)

Another trip to Best Buy and I had the textured version for Monochrome PDA's. Now this is the stuff! It worked wonders on my Streamlight Syclone making it a new favorite. While multiple sheets of the color version did beans for the PT Rage, a single layer of the textured evened it right up. So, what to do with the left over non-textured? It's providing scratch protection on the Surge and other lights that had good enough beams, without cutting down the output (although the clear shelf paper sounds like a better bargain for this sort of thing).

Welcome to our crazy world of things that Glow!

It worked wonders on my Streamlight Syclone making it a new favorite.

I`ll second that. Well, OK so it`s not my favourite- but it is actually now quite usable with the WR film applied. Before, well it was just a novelty with its amber LED and all, but now with its improved smoooth beam, I now keep it as an emergency light (loaded with L91 lithiums and a yellow Traser Glowring attached, mounted just over there using that helmet-clip plate thingy). Should do good in a power failure. When I finish its review, I may think about changing out that underperforming LED to a brighter white one too. Nicely made light, too bad the stock beam looks like cr*p.

Pictures of before-and-after beams for those that still don`t believe? I think I took some....nope, well let`s take some now.

Done.

The "without" shots were taken before (feature on my still not finished review page)- and with a slightly different white-balance setting, that`s why the colour`s different. The exposure setting in the "with" shots that I just took is not the same in narrow and wide picture- I usually adjust beamshots these days, to best show the beam`s flaws. A flared-out white dot isn`t as useful, neither is a dim fuzzy blur- the "without" shot for example, is much more iregular. Kinda like what`s left behind when you squish a spider on the wall.

But with the WR- Mmmm, nice! The wide setting still sucks, it just doesn`t suck quite as much.

Quickbeam, I dropped an envelope in the mail to you today.

I still have to get some international stamps to send a sample overseas . . .!

Something Ridiculous ?

I am mailing your envelope tomorrow Friday 2-8-02 (have to go to the post office for the international stuff!)

Let me know!

Even though WriteRight improved the beams of some of my lights, I found the small but noticeable loss of light simply not worth it, and I have removed it.

Budd,
I got the package a few days ago, thanks. Hey, you sent plenty - enough to cover half of my kitchen shelves too !! Shame you didn't include a sample of a loud flower pattern too - it would remind me of my childhood home

Well, just from some quick tests, I agree that the Contact paper does work as a beam smoother. But it cuts light output much more than the WriteRight does. Since you already lose some output with WriteRight, the difference is a major factor to me.

For tests, I used the same style Mag-Lite lamp, and compared a 4C Mag with the Contact paper to a 3D with WriteRight. Both had smooth close-up beams, but the 3D managed to project substantially further than the 4C.

One of the benefits of the WriteRight is that it actually makes the yellow-coloured Mag beam whiter. To me, that's a worthwhile improvement in itself.
The Contact paper doesn't do that - it may even yellow the beam a little more than it already is.

People have posted that the WriteRight meant for colour PDA screens is smooth - that is, it doesn't have the texture which has the positive effect on the beam.
I guess the texture on the WriteRight for B+W screens is the major difference between the Contact and any other film which you might try.

Did you get the WriteRight sample I sent you yet ? Any views on it ?

Ps - Guys: best thing to do is ignore ol' Brightnorm's posts. He's become a Nihilist !!

NO! I have not received it yet!

I had never tried WriteRight, but I had tried Contact® clear paper. After hearing that the WriteRight didn't reduce the light as extensively, I decided to try the WriteRight and compare. I peeled the the Contact® paper off the lense of a UK 2AAA light, cleaned the lens, and applied the WriteRight. While the beam was smoothed compared to the the straight clear lens, I noticed the defective nature of splattered looking hot spot was still noticeable. With the Contact® paper, it had been smoothed to a near perfect round spot. I peeled the WriteRight off, and re-installed Contact® paper. WriteRight seems to be helpful in the mild cases.

If you have a severe beam problem, Contact® also makes a frosted paper. You loose a lot more light, but it fixes the most extreme cases. I even managed to clean up the silly little squiggle in the hotspot of a Streamlight ProPoly 4AA.

Budd, sorry, I seem to have missed your post above. Talking about Post, have you recieved the envelope yet ??
I addressed it properly, put enough stamps on it, and sent it long ago.

And it was my very last piece of the stuff too.

I have no doubt that you sent it! I just double checked my growing pile of mail, and did not see it. I will check my truck in the morning, sometimes I pick up my mail but don't bring it in.

Hopefully it will turn up. I do appreciate you sending it to me though.

Of course I will let you know if/when I find it.

Many thanks for the efforts though.

*Something Ridiculous?

Guess what I received in the mail yesterday?

The sample of WriteRIGHT that you sent me on Feb 17th!

Just a shade under 3½ months!

Thanks,

Budd,
that's amazing - was it addressed OK and so on ?

Sometimes, a letter from the States takes 3 days to get to me, mostly it's 7-10 days.

Three and a half months ......

Addressed Perfectly!

A sticker said that there was not enought postage for airmail, redirecting to ground.

They must have had a tug boat or a row boat carry it over "the big pond".

Wild stuff, huh!

Thanks!
