CMG and ARC AAA - Which is brighter?

I have the CMG but get the feeling that the ARC is brighter? Anyone have both?

best regards,

Arnold

The Arc AAA is substantially brighter, and smaller. The inifity has killer run-time - so they both have their strong points. If I were to have only one little LED light, it would be an ARC. Just so happens that I have, oh, 20 or so LED lights to choose from, so I have one for every occasion. I use the infinity for reading (camping, late at night, etc) and for an infinitely portable night-light for my daughter when we travel.

Arnold,

The CMG runs about 40 hours. The Arc AAA about 5. The CMG's AA has twice the capacity of the Arc's AAA, and it puts out about 1/4 the light - which account for its 8x run time.

I have both. I got the CMG first, but it got relegated to backup duty after I got my Arc AAA LE. The CMG is not only weaker, it also is really too heavy for keychain use. The Arc also has better knurling for one-handed activation.

IMHO the Arc AAA LE is about the perfect flashlight. Being on my keyring, it's always there when I need it. Its throw penetrates the woods deep enough for camping use, but it isn't bright enough to rob you of night vision. Now if they could just come up with a reliable pushbutton switch without adding cost, weight, or size. ;-)

The AAA is rated at 5 hours. The beauty of the Arc lights is that they are electronically controlled to produce a relatively constant bright light for those 5 hours, then go into Moon Mode for the rest of the battery's life. I love that feature about them, and think every light should be controlled like that. The Infinity begins to dim as it drains the battery, but you do get about 40 hours of useable light from it.

Dave beat me too it by a fraction of a minute (just in case you thought I was an idiot for posting the same thing AFTER David's post.)

Check here for all the info on the Arc lights: Arc AAA

Darrell and Dave:

Many thanks for the information. I'm ordering two Arcs right now!

best,

Arnold

I just received 2 arc AAA White lights recently ordered. One has a nice beam, very even, with a tight blue area in the center. The other could not be more different, not quite as bright (new batteries in both), scattered blue area in the center, and worst of all intermittent flicker. Disappointed in the second one, think the first is an excellent light.

The Arc is considerably brigher, but the Infinity is more economical to operate.
I use the Infinity for an hour or so every night because I don't have to feel guilty about burning down the battery even though I have a tight budget. And even I can afford one or two batteries a month.

I'll go for the Arc usually only if it's handy at the moment, or if I need more light than the Infinity will give me.

ARC BEATS INFINITY CMG (I HAVE BOTH) HANDS DOWN.

PS- I've given my Infinity to my kids to play with in the backyard - they complained "why is your light brighter, Dad?"

I used to be a longevity freak...and in some ways I still am. I don't think the malady really has a cure.

STILL..... I opt for the ARC at all times now. I have found out the hard way.... what good is being able to see for 200 hours if you cannot see good enough to find what you are looking for? IMHO

I now use the Versalux ( Eternalight parent ) to read by and for longer tasks. It runs pretty near forever on 4 D cells and has 10 blinding led's.

I use SatCure for hall night lights, cabin lights etc. It runs several month's on 1 D cell. Not much to search for things with but enough light at night not to stumble.

I am never without the Arc. I am hooked on the bright little light. I use it quite heavily now and go through about 1 battery every 10 days. I gave up 2 Diet Pepsi a month to pay for the Arc habit..

i, like ken, used to be a longevity freak...now it's become more refined as to be an efficiencey freak...

i bought an LE last month and i'm glad i did...it is a good light, pretty bright for a single LED...the construction is good quality, the HA-III finish is most excellent...if you want a fairly bright (a bit brighter than the mag solitare, but doesn't throw as far) white LED light, this one is great for it's size...

i've had a green LED infinity (supposedly their brightest) for quite awhile (over a year) and it was the most used light i had for a long time...i don't seem to need (or want, even) as much light as other folks...i find this light to be great for close up work where color isn't an issue...it preserves night vision very well -- for reading maps, looking through a ruck-sack, navigating the house at night, etc....very sturdy, solid construction...the run-time is an excellent side-effect...

from an efficiencey stand point, LEDs are much more efficient at lower voltages...the infinity probably drives the LED close to specs where-as the ARC overdrives it to it's maximum...over-all light (meaning throughout the life of the battery) is going to be much better from the infinity...

they are both good lights, it really depends on what you plans are for the light...

all-in-all more people sem to like the arc's brightness compared to the infinity's run-time and i would probably recomend that to someone trying to decide between the two...

if you want a light for around home why bother with a keychain light. I think the arc is great, just to pricey for something to carry on your keys. i have the cmg, arc, and I just bought a photon 2 this past week. the photon 2 is quickly becoming my favorite keychain light. but if you just want a general use light you can get a princeton tec attitude for a few bucks cheaper than the arc. it has 3 leds and is a lot brighter than the arc. there are a lot of lights brighter than the arc out there for a more reasonable price, there just not keychain size. i imagine the high cost of the arc is due to the small size and regulation. but if you think your a flashaholic just go buy them all! haha
but you could order from texas tactical supply a arc and infinity for reasonable prices. im sure you will find a job that fits both of them.

If you can buy only one (shudder), get the ARC. It is the best all around.

However, I still like the Infinity.
- available for $13 on the Internet
- uses AA, more energy for the buck...by far
- not TOO bright, some find the ARC TOO bright for reading shiny paper
- AAs are available in Lithium (for REALLY long life + works in the cold)
- total, rock solid quality (I had to send my ARC back for flickering)

Get the Blue-Green. I have both. I really like my Infinity Blue-Green, plenty bright.

But, having said that, if you can only get one, get the ARC (but I keep a Photon II on my key chain for casual use).

Well my infinity is probably 85% what my Arc AAA is. It's probably 80% my Arc le.

Further, a friend of mine has a new infinity and comparing to the Arc they where dead on equal.

Get an ARC AAA. It is IMO the best overall LED light going. Or if you can wait and have faith, wait for the much-rumored Special Forum ARC AAA light in hard anodized blue (either navy or royal).

If memory serves it will be properly labeled as the Forum Light and will be much the same as the ARC AAA LE.

Either you have a bummer Arc, or your friend got an amazing Infinity. The brightness of the two lights could never be called "dead equal" if they were both functioning as designed.

Get an ARC LE and don't worry about all the opinions...

It's bright, well made and should last a lifetime.

"Nuff said.
