Looking for a replacement for the CMG.
  • Single AA
  • Twisty Head Preferrable
  • Single Mode Preferrable
  • Seoul, Cree, Rebel
  • HAIII
  • Quality Build
Would love to have an ultra government modded with the new LED's but that doesn't look promising.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

It's almost odd - I don't recall seeing many AA lights in a twisty except the Jetbeam C-LE and unfortunately that's a multimode light but a nice one that I think is HAIII. The Fenix Civictor is a AA twisty but uses only a 1 Watt Luxeon - that will certainly way outshine the CMG but not incredible brightness. However it might be a good choice if you don't need a huge amount of light.

Take a good look at the Peak Kilimanjaro -- the 1-LED version.

Excellent build quality (like all Peaks) and durability. Size is similar to the CMG/Infinity Ultra-Gov't, albeit approx. .25 inch longer. Runtime is est. @ 12 hrs., or about half the I-Ultra-G's, although the Kilimanjaro 1-LED may be slightly brighter. Cost is $35 for brass or HA-III aluminum version, $45 for stainless steel.

Also scan the B-S-T threads here, as those classic IU-G's and original CMG-IU's (similar, but lesser anodizing) show up For Sale occasionally (usually at prices approaching the Peak Kilimanjaro level). If you go this route, don't mistakenly grab a regular "CMG Infinity" model which has weaker output (although even longer runtime) than the CMG Infinity Ultra.

I second the Peak suggestion, especially if you want a little brighter.

I've a Fenix L1D that I like a lot. In the regular mode, low is the primary (i.e. first click). It's a little brighter and more spot than the CMG UInf. But a slight (like 1/8th) turn of the bezel takes it to turbo hi which is quite bright and useful.

Not nearly as stout as the CMG, but then, not much is. Mine has gone through some ruff use (it's replaced the CMG in my tool pants) in the 6 months I've had it and even tho it shows wear, it's functioning perfectly.

Got my hopes up por nada. I called and the nice lady said that the pic is outdated and they have none of the "old style".

old ones/style CMG - are not made as of 2-3 yrs ago IIRC when Gerber bought out the company... but occasionally can run across old stock CMG in older sport shops or online etc...

enough light for up close work, built like tank, and runs on any AA forever is why I have several... ah... sometimes the good ol days are better :grin2:

Peak Pacific in the extended runtime version with a SSC would be my choice. The brightness is a lot more that the CMG and the runtime is very long.

The 1 LED Kilimanjaro models will definitely not offer "a lot of light" in comparison to the Pacific, but will be more useful for walking inside a building in the dark, close range reading, inside a tent, etc. Usable runtime will be somewhere between 5 and 12 hours depending on the type of battery used. So the Pacific is basically between those high power AA lights like the Fenix L1P or L1T (on high) which offer even more output for even shorter runtimes, and the 5 mm LED Kilimanjaro which offers lower output for much longer runtimes.

Saiga, that is a new variation of the current Gerber Ultra Infinity, I believe. Certainly does not look like the original Government Ultra. Not sure if that is milspec anodizing. Made overseas.

i'm pretty sure i read on another site that this model had the haIII anodizing, and extra water\proofing,yadda-yadda.

So, the new version Infinity Ultra-M might have worked although you do prefer a twisty head.

Your other requirements are: Seoul, Cree, Rebel. That knocks even the original CMG Government model out of contention as you're looking for more output.

It looks like you might have to sacrifice one of the categories to get close. The P1D-CE comes to mind but is the wrong battery type and has extra modes.

The Inova X1 comes to mind but is a rear twisty and although the LED is updated, it's not a Cree, Seoul, or Rebel.

The peak is probably the closest while it only fails in one catagory...the LED type that you prefer.

Good luck and let us know what you end up picking :)

Peak Pacific with SSC-P4 and optional AA body. You will have to choose one of 4 output levels. You will get the old Luxeon model if you do not specify P4. You will get the AAA body if you do not specify the AA body. Available in brass, HA III, or Titanium.
Contact Peak for more info/ordering. Peak also has a subforum over at marketplace.

What about an arc aaa-p, it brighter and smaller than the infinity government

RE-reading this thread, it seems the new style Gerber might work well for you. Not as robust, but certainly not a bad light.

One good feature is that if the head is not turned too far in the off position, the the light can be held in the palm with the head grasped by the pinky finger and the body pressed by the thumb to act as a momentary switch. I'm sure someone else can explain this much better -- it's much easier to do than describe.
