CMG Reactor is an LS

So has anyone actually pre-ordered one of these CMG Reactor already? Would it be better if you pre-order one of these puppies, or should I wait? I visited their website earlier and it sells for only $30!!! Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the price is pretty cheap for an LS flashlight.

Thanks everyone!

This is the same question on my mind...to wait or not.

If all holds true it will be brighter than a Lightwave 4000 and have a smaller form factor at half the price. Do I really want/need this flashlight? If I wait they could be sold out...but then the 5 watt Ls might be around the corner. I should buy a new pair of shoes and some food. Hmmm

BTW...Whats the deal on Craigs computer? Whats wrong?

At this point I'm not sure if I would buy another LED light that wasn't regulated, no matter how attractive it was.

Yes, I admit that I preordered the CMG without knowing whether it was regulated. After all I AM a Flashaholic, but I'm now interested in lights that advance the state of the art, or at least show some advantage over other lights in my collection.

I find the slow development of regulated lights very frustrating, but I also realize that those of us who care about such things are a fractional minority. I suspect that if and when our military becomes aware of the merits of regulated lights, then the market might finally take off.

Hello Darell & All Flashaholics:

I believe you are wrong in that the CMG Reactor is not regulated.

I will be talking to CMG tomorrow and
will get the low down.

They changed the release date because of some tweaking they are doing to the
Reactor.
CMG wants it perrrrfect.

They designed a new circuit board for this
light and the two owner/engineers are
very bright people.

Also, like other manufacturers, CMG
will send a "Reactor" to our leader
up on Mt. LED Museum.
If they don't - Eppe's Corner will.

It will be nice to hear from our
leader in the "LiteMobile", that
Eppe's Corner's feeling about the
quality of this lite is shared by
the "All-Seeing-All-Knowing-Sage"
up on Mt. LED Museum.

It would also be great to find allot of
flashaholics eating their words in big
bites, finding out how good the
new "CMG REACTOR" really is.

I must now return to our corner for
some much needed lunch.

Have a bright one !!!

Hello Brightnorm:

I forgot to mention that we have been
selling Tektite Expedition 1900 ( 19-LED)Flashlights to some of our
Navy Underwater Demolition Teams.

Other Navy units have also ordered this
lite.

Have a shining one !

I must say I`m looking forward to reviewing one of these too.

Regulator or no, I feel it is pushing forward flashlight technology, by being the first affordable and readilly avaliable Luxeon Star LED light. Sure, Arc was first with their LS, but it has so far only been avaliable in small quantities, and is comparatively expensive too. With luck the Reactor will be a very well made and well performing light, and the first to introduce these new powerful LEDs to the more general public. The Arc LS is a fantastic light but Joe Public would have a hard time handing over that sort of money. He may also think twice about forty odd bucks for the Reactor, but at least it is sort-of affordable. Once more and more people hear about the benefits of LED lighting over conventional, there will be no going back! And those prices will just keep a-tumbling too.

A regulated output would be a bonus! But, one step at a time folks....

We do seem to speculate without sufficient knowledge, don't we? I don't know that there's been that much negative reaction yet, though.

We don't want to forget that CMG is THE pioneer of electronically modified LED lights. Before them, the led's 3 cell requirments produced long pool cue shaped lights. I would expect nothing less than innovation from them. Since the Infinity, the rest of us have been basically producing modified versions of their light.

UPDATE!
First REACTORS being shipped today by CMG
Eastern Mountain Sports first on list and should have in 1-2 days. REI also at the top, (by the end of the week) plus many others this first week

The reactor sounds good, but will it be as good as the Arc-LS? I doubt it, not for $40 anyway.

Let's face it, if you just want a flashlight, go out and buy a Mag, Brinkman or something cheap from Wally-world. Now if you're looking for a light that stands above the rest, it's Surefire, Streamlight, or Arc.

I'd rather spend my hard-earned dollars on a $160 flashlight that I know I can count on, rather than something that might fail the next time I use it.

Will the Reactor sell? Sure, but as a flashaholic, we know the difference between an average flashlight and something special. Only time will tell with the Reactor

Now, where was that credit card?....

No doubt you've named some high quality manufacturers there. However, I sure seem to remember a lot of posts about Arc flashlights that had issues. (Not trying to pick on Arc, I'm just not as familiar with the others since I primarily do LEDs) Leading edge products often have the most problems. Seems like every basic Wally World flashlight I've ever had did just what it was supposed to do w/o a problem. Spending $30-$50 for a flashlight is a lot. I don't even bother thinking about $100 flashlights. I hope the Reactor brings to the market a good, affordable LS. If not, I'll just have to wait until someone else does it a this price point.

RonM,

Good point. I was not knocking CMG and have an Infinity, I'm just in love with my Arc-LS.

As an engineer, I'm always looking for the best tools and was totally amazed with the Arc. I have lots of less expensive flashlights in my collection and, while they serve their purpose, I've had too many failures, sometimes in remote locations, to fully trust them. (Please see http://www.candlepowerforums.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=002483 for more info). As an engineer, I see failures of all kinds of products, some right out of the box. Others have to be severely abused to kill them - these are the ones I try to stick to. I guess, I'm just willing to pay a premium for the best quality.

I REALLY hope the Reactor is all it's advertised to be. I'll be calling my local Eastern Mountain Sports to see if they'll hold one for me as I can't wait to get my hands on it. The Reactor is too large (for my tastes) to be an EDC, but may very well fill the gap between Wally-world flashlights and the Arc-LS and may even fit the bill as an "extreme environment" light.

I just ordered one too, and it came out to be about $38 bucks. Just wondering, does anyone know if these things are waterproof? Or at least water resistant? I won't be diving with one, just wanted to see if you can use them in the severe weather we have here in SoCal.

June 17, 2002

Hello All Flashaholics:

The NEW ! CMG Reactor is expected in our
hands before or on the July 8th date.

After Eastern Sports and REI, we will be
in the next group to receive the "Reactor".

The "Reactor" is using the new
"Luxeon Star LED".

Because of patents, CMG could not
talk about the circuit board at
this time, but our feeling from the conversation is that the "CMG Reactor"
is very much a regulated LED flashlight.

The CMG "Reactor" is water resistant
which means no skinny dippin in the
bath tub but if you are snowed-on or
rained-on, no problem.

CMG told us they are sending a
"Reactor" to our
"All-Seeing-All-Knowing-Sage"
up on Mt. LED Museum.

Based on what we have heard, all you
flashaholics start getting your
fork and knife out to eat your words.

For the lower price of the CMG "Reactor",
it strongly appears some of the other
LED's you have talked about will have
a very big run for their money.

I have to go. A friend doesn't believe
a Pelican Super SabreLite 3-"C" Xenon
flashlight can blow away a 5-"D" Mag.
I did it once in a snow storm and I
will do it again now.

Have a bright one !

I can`t imagine what the circuit board would do. Could it have differant power levels? Twist a little for low, more for increased brightness. That would be nice.

Maybe it could pulse the power to make the batts last longer...but wouldn`t that make it dimmer?
