Hi folks,
In July thie year, I'm paying a visit to America with my family. We're flying into Florida to do the usual disney/universal etc stuff. I'm looking forward to it.
When I'm over, I'd like to see some decent flashlight / knife stores in the Orlando area - can anyone recommend any? Any other recommendations for things to do & see whilst I'm over? I only have 2 weeks and the kids will want to spend time at Disney but I'm open to suggestions! All will be gratefully received.

Ross,
I have a recommendation for you. Start sleeping with the heater on and 5 blankets. It is really hot in July. Many years ago the company I worked for in Texas did an exchange program with a Scottish company. The guys got to Texas in July and literally almost died. We had two of the three pass out on us one day. We had been outside for about 4 hours. We picked them up and dropped them (softly) in a pond. Both ended up going to the hospital.

Use lot's and lot’s of sun block. Force your kids to drink large amounts of water before going outdoors and keep them drinking water all day and you should have a ball.

There are at least a couple of Orlando guys here so they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Re: Coming to America - Orlando people needed...

Yep. Going to be a climatic shock. Like going from dry, zero humidity in Cali to Beijing in July, where you're dying of heat and 100% humidity the entire day, sweat never dryin' up. Then you trek over to Sweden and you're now hypothermic.

Make sure your kids have a lot of water to drink. Keep the SPF ready, and have a lot of fun with your stay in the US.

There's a few Orlandans (sp?) here that can point you to a map of where to go for knives and lights.

Ross, depending on when you're coming you may be in for a treat as the Annual Knifemakers Guild Show is taking place at the Marriott Orlando World Center July 11, 12 and 13. This is probably THE premier show for members of the Knifemakers Guild alot of foreign makers and Guild members will also be in attendance. Really something to see and an excellent oportunity to see and purchase some of the work of today's best, firsthand. As for shopping for lights as Dave said that is something best left to the locals but I would definitely try to get to the Guild show.

Search "Knifemakers Guild Show" for more show info and contact info

are you looking forward to your trip so you can bring back some goodies? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

will you be able to get through customs? if not, i would suggest you mail them to yourself on your last day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think there are some Disney fan sites on the web that give a lot of good free advice on how to best enjoy Disney World. Insider tips and such, where to eat, shop, best time to go to certain rides, etc.

Orlando...let's see.

You should try "Smokey Bones" at least once. It's a regional (national now?) chain, with barb-q stuff. There's also a nice steak and I believe seafood place called "Fishbones" that a friend of mine always visits when he goes to Orlando.

It's not far of a drive to the beach. My favorite is Cocoa, but I've only visited in the area for a couple of weeks in total. There should be NASA stuff in that area to see, but I'm far from the expert on that.

These guys are right about sunscreen!! Go with the high number rated stuff, especially if you go in or near the water.

One of my best friends lives in Orlando. Let us know if there's something in particular you're looking for. (Alas, she's not a flashlight person at all, so she'd have no clue about stores.)

Oh, and film and developing should be as inexpensive here as anywhere, so with the airlines setting their x-ray machines to "glow in the dark" mode, I'd suggest buying film and having it processed here in the states. 35mm and APS are common, I don't think we have 110 or disk formats anymore.

Some great ideas guys! I was going to get some goodies so the suggestion to mail them to myself is a GOOD one! TSG, unfortunately, I leave the UK on the 14th July so I will miss it, I would have LOVED to have gone but hey. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif
I spent some time in Australia so I should climatise to the USA fairly quickly, I'll make sure the kids are well protected.
Albany Tom - I'm just after some cool gear, flashlights & knives!! Any stores at all your friend could recommend would be great.
Keep the suggestions coming!

Don't know if your wife and kids would like it but a favorite of mine is a drive down to Key West. Duval St. is a sight indeed. It's a party town so it's more fun for adults than kids but still well worth a visit if it suits you. My wife an I head down there every year or so when the urge strikes. A couple of days is plenty to cover the whole island unless your a real party person.

Key West used to be a more isolated place. If You've ever wondered what happened to all those 60's era hippies, they're in Key West. Kind of fun, but it's gotten much more commercial in the last 10 years than it used to be.

If you do go, pay attention to where you stay. Check with the hotel itself and ask about "dress code"; at many of the hotels, clothing is optional.

From Orlando down to Key West is about 150 miles I guess, I don't know exactly, I never payed attention to the distance. It's not all that far but it can be a slow trip since it's only a two lane road for the most part once you get into the Keys. The best you can average is maybe 55mph, and watch for cops. Speed traps are everywhere, especially after dark.

You'd want to stay overnight but be warned, it's a bit pricey. I'd stay at the Red Rooster on Rt. 1 on the way into Key West, it's about $75.00/night in the summer (off season there). Stop at the tourst centers on the way down for info and to make reservations.

You can buy a beer at any bar (many are open 24 hours), wander the streets with it, go into another, stay up all night and never see an argument. Every place has entertainment of some sort and some of the bars are real charachers. Try the "Hogs Breath". I've been there many times and have yet to see a cop or have any problem at all. Everyone's very friendly - it's a different culture in some ways. The streets get a bit crowded but there's never any friction.

It's not worth getting up much before 11:00am because nothing happens early. Everyone gathers on the waterfront for sundown celabration. You can buy a drink at any of the rolling bars and to watch the various shows that go on. That's the start of day at Key West, after that, Duval St. livens up and the partying goes on through the night.

It may not be your cup of tea, especially with kids to entertain, but it's fun, and if you out of things to do, consider it.
