Comments on SF A2 Aviator

I don't have a meter, but I'd say on the LEDs the A2 would be at least twice as bright as a keychain LED.

Think of the A2's LEDs as just a smidgen short of the Inova X5T, but when you need more brightness you can push the button a little more and get regulated hotwire light. .

Ok but most keychain led's use a single 2032 at 3v, at least I think most do. The Photon uses 2 2016's for 6v (I think it's 6v).

Never used the innova, but if the A2 is as bright as
a 2x2016 Photon, or even an ASP w/ 2032 then the led output would be very useful especially considering it's 1200 minute runtime.

Keychain LEDs use different batteries depending on the color of light they produce, if I'm not mistaken. Some colors need a little more oomph. My CC lights are running on two batteries in white, one in amber.

I'm lost in the technical terms, but according to Flashlightreviews.com, an Inova Microlight lux output is 13. The A2's LED lux output is 40. So basically, the way I read it, it's 3 times the light with a considerable amount of runtime.

i dont suppose there is a way to acquire a black aviattor a2 now is there🙂?

also, i had a question about the a2's with different color LEDs. i have one with white, so i can't tell. if u have one that has red LEDs, and u activate the incand, can u tell from the light output? someone told me that because the incand is so bright, it over powers the LEDs and you dont see the other color. i wanted to know if this was the case or are the LEDs turned off when it kicks in the incand?

The LED's stay on, thats one of the differences with Streamlight TT series.

The incandescent does overwhelm the LED's, but I suspect if you're doing up close work on a white background you MIGHT be able to tell if yoy had the red LED's.

I think a regulated hotwire is great and the full spectrum of light output has some real advantages in certain conditions. Driving a wire at a constant voltage is every bit as desireable as driving a LED at a constant current, IMHO. Although over a year old and still suffering from BackOrders, I think the A2 is still a sleeper! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif My only disappointment at this point in time is the fact that the A2 doesn't have any brothers and sisters to flesh out the line.

"The LED's stay on, thats one of the differences with Streamlight TT series."

Would this account for the diff in incan runtime between the
the A2 (50) and the E2e (75)?? I'm assuming they use the
same incan lamp/bulb ...right?

Well sort of...

The A2's output is regulated using electronics so that it does not dim throughout the runtime of the batteries. So the A2's output is the same when you put fresh SF123As in it as it is after 40 minutes or whatever.

The E2e (and other non-regulated flashlights) will dim (some faster then others) over the course of the runtime of the batteries. The "Lumen" output is in some cases the maximum output but SureFire rates their outputs based on the 'typical' output.
I believe I have seen a runtime/output comparison of the A2 and E2e that showed the regulated A2's output gave brighter output for longer compared to the E2e. That is certainly my experience and why I love the A2 so much. For me it gives me better value (better quality light) over the course of the runtime.

I would like if someone could mod an A2 to have the older LEDs and a new Luxeon instead of the bulb. That would be cool!

cornkid, if you modded A2 with a luxeon, then the charm would be gone.

never could understand why some prefer incand's until I started playing with an M6 and it's bright white beam. it got me liking incand's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

to me, A2 delivers a smaller version of that type beam.

As great as Luxeons are, there are still things that they can't do at this point in time. Things are changing constantly, but the A2 makes for a great combination.

While it's certainly not in the same class as the A2, if the Twintask 2L would be made to operate in the same way, I'd buy one. My non-flashaholic friends could understand the 2L, but SF pricing stupifies them. .

Twas interesting to see on that Dutch site someone
posted the URL to that the A2 actually out-throws
the E2e even though on paper it's down 10 lumens.

That actually makes me want it more since in LED mode
you've got all the flood you need.
