I am trying to choose between a Willie Hunt regulated Princeton Tec Surge and the Lighting Pro Headlite that uses the same technology. There is no information available for the Lighting Pro unit other than the fact that it uses an HPR50 bulb rated at 85 lumens @ 5.2V and 0.85A.

The Princeton Tec Surge has been measured at 28 candlepower @7m at this website:

and 4270 lux @ 1m at this website:

My thanks to these fellows for posting their measurements.

Does anyone else have experience with these two lights or have any other means to compare them?

Thanks in advance,

Lots of members here have the Surge but I have not heard of a Willie Hunt Surge. Please tell me more as it sounds great.
TIA

the 'lighting pro' headlamp looks liek a re-branded easter seals headlamp.

i don't have one, but i do have one of the regular 4AA headlamps that uses the same housing. it's a nice, simple, water-resistant (proof?) lamp. easy to mod, easy to repair on your own.

I think brightguys.com have 115 lumens in their description of the PT Surge, however where that figure came from is anyone's guess, as it's not listed on PT's own website. However anecdotal evidence suggests it's not misleading. A regulated PT Surge - what a fantastic idea!

Now that I re-read my post, the description of the Surge is misleading.

Here's the whole story:

I will be competing in a canoe marathon this year. We will need approximately 6 hours of light per night for 3 nights. I was considering using a Princeton Tec Surge modified to use an external NiMH battery pack. I was also going to install one of Willie LVR's in the body of the Surge to maintain constant voltage across the lamp.

I am considering the other light because it already has the LVR build in to the water resistant housing.

I already have a Surge on the way so it's just a matter of determining which will be the primary light.

On a side note, I am considering a 12 NiMH 9000mAh D-cell power pack for either of these beasts. I can get the cells for $107 and the charger for $47. Two questions:

1) Does this sound like a reasonable price?
2) Is there anywhere I can get LiIon batteries offering the same capacity for less?

Thanks!
