After reading various negative reviews and several comments from multiple people I began to wonder about my desire for an X1. The general consensus seemed to be "it's well built, but not useful."

Well, I finally gave in and bought one on eBay (at a price that was, no doubt, driven by the reviews on this forum - thank you for that). My interest was driven largely by curiosity. When it arrived, I was very pleasantly surprised. First, the light is really attractive. I got the black anodized model. Yes, it's considerably bigger than an ARC AAA or even a CMG Ultra, but I love the way it feels in my hand. The switch mechanism is first rate and just seems to be something that will be reliable forever. The tailcap rotates smoothly, with no hint of looseness or play. The momentary mode switch on the tail is a neat added benefit.

Up to this point, most folks have agreed with me. Now I just have to say, I really like the beam! I think the light is brighter than any of my other single cell lights, though it can be hard to judge given the nature of the beam. It's brighter than my Brinkmann longlife and Rebel. Furthermore, the perfect circle of light and the intensity of the beam really make this practical (IMHO) as a medium distance spotlight. I feel like a prison guard operating one of those spotlights trying to light up prisoners contemplating escape. The circle of light produced is much cleaner than any of my other narrow beam lights (Brinkmanns and PALs).

Inside the house, there's plenty of reflection from whatever I'm illuminating with it to make any room navigable with no problem.

Bottom line for me is, I like this light! It feels substantial in my pocket and my hand and it feels powerful when I light up something with it. It won't replace my ARC AAA (I have that on my keyring), but I will probably carry this one with me in my pocket for a while.

There, now I feel better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just got two X1s today free as a giveaway premium. Nicely constructed.

When my wife saw the beam she said, "It's the perfect spotlight for puppet shows."

I like it to, but it's uses to me are more narrow than the general use I can get from most of my lights.

I also like it, and I think it's an ideal backpacking light. I have to admit, though, I don't get that much more use out of it. Atleast, not with all the other lights I have around.

I received an X1 for Christmas and find it to be a really beautifully designed light. I'm not yet sure what function it will actually serve in my stable of lights, but that's okay. If nothing else, it's just nice to look at and operate. I don't think we flashaholics need any more reasons than those. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I've got several X1s and really like them. Around home at night, it's the first light I reach for. I'm just sorry they're not going to make the red LED one, that was the next one I was going to buy... -Bob

Add another vote for the X1. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif I purchased one on a lark (white led). Not the brightest, but that's what I have the SNII and Super LGI for. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have replaced my MiniMag 2aaa with the X1 as my close up work light. It is more economical for me than my Photon II, Pulsar, Inova Microlight, or Led Lensers, all of which use the more expensive watch batteries.

I also like the projection style "almost no spill" beam.

Again, not the brightest, but useful for me.

I LIKE mine, but the only use I can find for it is as a gunsmithing inspection light.

It's a well built light, but relying on "reflection" from the surface it strikes only works if the beam is striking a fairly reflective surface. Use it outdoors or on dark surfaces that absorb most of the light and you have a serious problem with trip hazards.

Well, I agree that it's not the ideal, all around light. There are better ones for close up work, but that just gives me an excuse to have other lights, as well. It's just that seldom have I gotten my hands on a light that "feels" as good as this one. I know I don't have any other (and haven't seen any other) 5mm LED lights with this kind of projection capability. This one just resonates with something inside me. Maybe I'm revealing my inner personality to some of the psychologists on the forum (I assume psychologists and psychiatrists can be flashaholics, too). Sort of a three dimensional Rorshach test /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've found the Inova X1 is a good inspection light for looking into equipment at distances up to about 8 feet. My 8-foot distance is merely a guess; but, I find the X1's brightness diminishes too much beyond about this distance for inspection light uses.

Well, although I've still got no specific purpose for my X1, it always rides in a belt holster with me. Never notice it and almost forget about it.
Yes, it is quite useless for some people but it sure looks cool both to handle and look!
I keep mine with an L91 so I never worry about it.

A red version would be cool although I think it would ruin my night vision in some way.

I got mine off the early advertisement on this forum. I was a little suprised at how big a "X1" would be. I was figuring it would be about the size of an Arc AAA. After using it for a few minor things it went into my pocket. It retired my E1e. My job requires me to do occasional building inspections on weekends. Its great for that. It also fits into some of the little toys I've picked up that use Mag AA lights, including my headband and the thing with 4 feet that acts as a stand.

I want to say I really like the fact that it uses a single AA battery. Its just a non-issue because I'm only on my 2nd battery. Its removed that battery as an expense on an EDC light. Its better than a E1 with the KL1 head as far as time goes. Its not my favorite light..but the throw of hte narrow beam is pretty good compared to other lights. For many purposes its as good as a mag 2D but it lasts several times as long on one tiny battery.

My white one is really got a blue cast. The cats follow it almost as much as a laser. I think its the prism like effect on the edge of the spot. Its a much better light than either of my X5s that just sit on the shelf.

I like 'em too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif The green is quite bright and really has a pretty decent throw to it. A white X1 and a red Infinity Task light stay in my shaving kit when I am travelling.

I had not heard that they were not going to make the red X1. That is a pity. I had one on my list of toys to pick up.

I ordered a red X1 and it never showed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The reason for the red X1 is unique. A friend of mine went to Tallil, Iraq (same base as bryan)I threw her my mini-LGI and a small $1 violet keychain light. I saw her over Christmas and she still had the keychain light. Showed her the Arc AA and she said it was cool but she prefered the keychain light over the Arc and mini-LGI. It would seem that when she woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, she would use the ultra narrow violet beam of the keychain light to see but not wake anyone else up.
The red X1 would of been perfect for that purpose. I guess a red Arc AAA would be OK...I could put a removable cap on the end to dim it down and narrow the beam. For my use, the X1 only makes sense in red.

I can't wait to get my hands on the X1. I have already ordered one some time ago and it's still being shipped here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I agree with what some people have mentioned here: I find the X1 to be very aesthetically pleasing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif I don't EDC it though, and for my purposes, I can't really find a need for it... but then that's just me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
