Howdy fellas, its been a while! But I know I can always count on CPF for some pull-no punches advice. Is anyone here currently enlisted in the Navy? Or have you served any time in the Navy in the past?
I'm looking for a real-world list of pros and cons... not just some recruiter-hype.
Why am I considering joining the Navy? Well, here's my situation in a nutshell. I'm 27 years old, and still don't know what I want to do career-wise for the rest of my life. Every time I think I know what I want to do, I focus all of my energy and efforts on that, only to find it way less satisfying than I originally anticipated. I have my Bachelor's in Management Information Systems, and a variety of tech certifications: A+, Network+, Security+, MCP, MCSA, MCSA: Security, MCSE, MCSE: Security. I recently left a job as a Network Administrator, and am now an Application Specialist at a Medical EMR software development company.
I consider myself a pretty intelligent guy, and think that if I were to go the military route, I would definitely be doing a job where I utilize my greatest asset (my brain) and don't think I'd be a front-line kind of guy.
I'm recently married (2 years and 3 months as of yesterday), and have no kids. My wife is fully supportive, and willing to up-and-move, should I enlist and we get stationed somewhere else in the country, or the world.
We both look at this as an exciting alternative to the routines that we're both doing every day now... (I mean, I'd get to travel the world for 6-8 months at a time, and we'd get to move somewhere, maybe even out of the country!) but I'm sure that there are definitely cons to consider, such as having babies in the next few years, and being away from my family for 6-8 months at a time.
I have to run to work, so I'm going to cut this short, but is there anything major I should definitely be aware of before making any decisions?? Thanks CPF!! :grouphug:
