I'm noticing some grey discoloration on my contacts, and I was wondering what it was, exactly. The strange thing is that the discoloration is far more prevalent on all of my contacts AFTER applying Deoxit and Deoxit Gold than before. Is this normal?

Most people use saline solution on their contacts. Don't your eyes burn?

But seriously folks, you're a great audience!

Are some (electrical) contacts something like a base metal with a kind of plating, and the plating is wearing off, or it removed oxidation revealing duller metal? There might also have been a kind of finish to make them look shiny and the Deoxit removed it...

Normal for me. It's the Deoxit that you put on now mixed up with both the stuff it cleaned off and tiny particles of metal scraped off the contacts every time they are used.
Nothing to worry about.

Thanks! Anyone else have any input? :poke:

Nothing to worry about although not sure why it colored that way. In a shop I worked at in the 90's we used Caig products, deoxit was called "magic red" in our shop because it worked so well. We had the 5% spray and the 100% liquid. magic green was thier cleaner and magic blue was their cleaner lube for audio faders. We didn't give complimentary names to products a that didn't deserve it. I still have the stuff around and use it.

So using the De-oxit is a good move regardless of the color you are seeing.
