Yeah. My titanium watch scratches really easy. Either get it coated or get tungsten.

Well, tungsten is really heavy but when eventually dropped small parts might splinter off. I've seen this happen to my darts many times. I don't know if this is the same or a simmilar alloy, but tungsten-darts are quite brittle. Knowing this and how heavy it is I wouldn't want to edc a tungsten light. This would be the one to put into the glass cabinet and to show off to fellow flashaholics.

So ... if you are set for the Ti ... I'd like the normal aluminium version with HA3 then /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
If I have the right to do so I'd opt for the Sapphire lens, too.

And Spacemarine ... if you'd want to change your opinion you of course may do so, you are the first one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

P.S.: I always thought Ti was the toughtest metal around and would not be scratched or develop patina easily? Am I completely wrong here?

As for the look:

TiN on the GOlden Dragon McLux:

(looks a slight little bit too warm in this photo)

TiCN on Blackbird:

For these kind of questions you should contact Brock (Jets22) though since he is doing this stuff ...

Titanium is really strong and doesn't oxidize, but it's not very hard. It still scratches easily. Way more easily than SS.

As far as I know, it actually doesn't break easily, but the matte finish ti normally has, easily wears of and becomes blank and shiny. Scratches will also appear from time to time. On the other hand you can drop it and don't have to worry about it breaking and the finish can be "refreshed"

I got a couple clips that are Ti and were plated TiNC or what ever it is designated as. This is the black plating. The black plating on Ti is very very nice looking and I would expect it to be one of the most durable of finishes. As far as Ti scratching easily, uh, I think every metal will show scratches unless it has been hardened considerably. I have many raw Ti parts and yes they have scratches. If I may be so bold, so what? If you were to put Ti and some anodized Al in the same rough service environment, my money would be on the Ti down the road. If the Ti Larry used is 6-4, the parts could be heat treated and if you get a beta surface on the metal, you will be hard pressed to scratch it easily.

A Ti part that is used will end up with random scratches that really aren't that noticible, IMHO. A worn or abradded plating of a different color than the parent material is much more noticible. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

thanx all!
would mean that Ti is in fact the best / most reasonable choice and that it can very well be left un-finished without any serious damage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Since there's only one Ti /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif I still will go with HA3 aluminium ... I agree with Doug on the "usability-factor" here ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the pictures Kiessling. I have already written a PM to Jets22, but he hasn't responded so far. The golden Dragon looks really cool, but I don't know if the golden color looks good on a small CR2 II... I just like the titanium color so much 🙂

Titanium does scratch very esily, but the scratches are almost self healng. Titanium oxidizes so quickly that the scratches don't stay shiny like stainless steel.

Well my watch doesn't "self heal"... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

And that's just normal wear and tear....(laying your wrist down on a harder surface, accidentally bumping into things, etc...)

Hey Ninja ... if I may be the first to post a stupid reply: your watch looks quite nice and special!
Not liek new, ok, but very /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
If this is "used Ti" it is more than acceptable for me ...

Even tungsten carbide will scratch - I have a wedding band made of it, and have tried to polish it with Al2O3 powder (Mhos hardness 9) and it won't polish, but still manages to get scratched and banged up. I guess it is all that diamond powder floating around out there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It is also very heavy - much heavier than a similar-sized 18K gold ring; more on par with a platinum ring. Hey, how about a platinum CR2...

That depends I think. The cr2 makes a great light to carry when wearing a suit, and golden colour would be nice for this. For edc I would prefer black.

Well, I'm back. (What's left of me, anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) I took the rest of the day off. I just checked the piece of bar that I made it from by dropping it from 5' onto an end edge on concrete. It didn't chip or dent. I then took a ball peen hammer and dented the corner in 4-5 places with no chipping observed. It's ductile. I *think* the light would survive a reasonable drop onto the front edge of the bezel without breaking the lens. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

Larry

Ah ... good to have you back, lightgiver /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now that Mr. Spacemarine has chosen Ti I'd like to announce I'd take Aluminium with HA3 and a Sapphire lens if this is an option for the second /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Thanx! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Awww, no one chose Tungsten? That's ok. You can always auction or raffle it off later!

Tungsten is tempting, yes, but the weight reduces one of the major advantages of this little marvel, and this is also true for bronze and brass.
As I am not a real collector and have decided to actually use my lights (yes I know, quite strange /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif), Ti and Al are the best choices here.
