I've recently moved to Sweden (from Norway) and I was wondering how the Swedes get their flashlights into the country from the States without paying tax or tariffs. In Norway you had a limit of something like $30 tax and tariff free. I know that there is no such allowance in Sweden, but does it work to have the seller declare the item as a gift? This worked in Norway but since I've never ordered any lights from the US while living in Sweden I don't know whether this will work here. Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Thanks in advance.

I'm not from Sweden but in the UK the item has to be under £18/$36 and a gift.

My main dealer is Lighthound.com and he always puts the value as $25 and a gift so It doesnt incure taxs.

I am Swedish and I have bought enough things from outside EU (mostly China and USA) to have an idea of how it works. There is no official limit in Sweden (I got this from the official website of the Swedish Customs, www.tullverket.se). Declaring it as a gift does not make any difference. This is also stated on the website. However, the customs generally don't bother with small-valued items (~200 SEK and under). They earn more money on the more expensive stuff :). I have noticed that your are more likely to get away with stuff that they don't really know what it is, e.g. strange electronics components. YMMV though.

Good luck with your purchases.
