Hi, a few of my Fenix lights say you can use cr123a cells aswell as 18650s. My question is if I understand correctly by using two cr123a in an 18650 light that does not specify they can be used I risk damaging the led and/or driver.

Is this only the case if I used said light at the higher lumen settings or is it still a problem even if I stick to the lower (100 lumen and below) settings.

I always have cr123a cells handy so would be handy if I could use at a pinch.

123’s according to the pros should not draw more then 1400-1500 ma. In a lot of lights they will draw way more then that and it may not be safe to do. On lower levels it should be fine

2X CR123A's is around 6 Volts vs 3.6 for a single 18650, unless the light is rated for the higher Voltage you do risk damaging it.

You can run a single CR123A in a 18650 light with either an adapter or a dummy cell, in this case Voltage is a little low (3 vs 3.6V) but it will work in a pinch.

Thanks for your replies.
I found an online review that specifically says not to use 2x cr123a cells in the light I wanted to at a pinch (sofirn Sc31 pro). So I may start carrying my Fenix E28r instead as Fenix say you can use 2x cr123a.

Correct. You can only use either battery if the light is designed for it. It doesn't have anything to do with output levels. Actually using a lower output level could do more damage than high as the light would need to reduce voltage even more
