Hey guys, I just a got a cree emitter in the mail and the lens was cracked due to excessive pressure on the dome in the mail. It was a free gift from a fellow CPF member and I would like to know if I can still fix it in any way or if it will work perfectly fine this way? I tried putting current through it and it seems to work normally. Anything I can do about the cracked lens or any bad side effects that could possibly arise from this?

The side effect is that the light pattern from the LED will now be disrupted. It might be a better idea to completely remove the dome.

Will the LED still last as long if the dome is removed? Can I replace it with another dome? I am asking because this was a Q5 cree and I don't want it to go to waste.

If it still works the way it is, consider yourself lucky and use it as is. Don't take of the dome, not only this would change the light color but it will affect the LED's lifespan. Don't forget that phosphor absorbs humidity.

Hi, I just got some cree emitters that have some perfect domes from a very generous CPF member (I don't know if he wants his name to be mentioned). Would replacing the dome with these other emitters work just fine and still be efficient? I am going to do it anyways but I was wondering if I did that, if it would still be a Q5 emitter.

Yes it will be. I was just about to send you a p2 to steal the lens from.

Wow thanks, even though I have some now, people on this forum are extremely generous. The extremely generous person that sent me the Cree leds was Nake. :twothumbs And one more question, is the actual phospher stuck on the bottom of the glass dome? And if it is, should I make sure that there is the same amount on the dome coming off as the one being placed on?

The phosphor is under the gel on the die. You should be as careful as you can when removing the old glass and try to leave as much gel under the dome as possible. Good Luck!

Cheers to nake!

Oh and would using super glue be okay to place the dome and metal ring back on okay? Or would the fumes from the super glue mess everything up?

I would recommend getting some clear silicone adhesive using a needle or something softer and trying to make a smooth surface out of the gel in there, then put a large glob of silicone on both the LED and the lens and sandwich them then clean extra silicone, try to get all air bubbles out.
