Cree, Inc. and Osram GmbH announce the signing of a comprehensive, worldwide patent cross-license agreement.
An interesting statement in the release.
"Cree recently announced a similar broad cross-license agreement with Philips and has existing patent agreements with Nichia and Toyoda Gosei regarding LED technology."
The industry seems to be coming together very well. This is very exciting as this will help move towards a standardization in key areas to speed the adoption of luminaires especially. It will also help reduce the waste of resources constantly fighting in court with one another as has been seen in the past. Obviously companies need to protect their IP but these agreements let them put more resources into moving forward than just protecting what they have.
It will be interesting for me to see how Cree capitalizes on this. Not long after the agreement with Philips Cree released the Direct Attach technology which was said to be held up due to some key patents held by Philips. So...what does Osram have that Cree wants? Should be interesting to find out.
