What is that on top of the switch?

That is an optional (depending on the buyer's preferences) reverse polarity protection "device". It is two Schottky diodes soldered in parallel to give a total of 4A rating - actual voltage drop is slightly less than .2 volts, which is a small price to pay in order to prevent a non-flashaholic to reverse the batteries in the mdocod 3xAA adapter and ruining a perfectly nice $25 P7 LED 😉

Just finished the build, just want to say (again) that i am very pleased with the quality of your work!

I allso really love the plugs, just one of those litlle things that complete it.

Thank you for your kind words 😱

The plugs was "invented" during Steffen's first light, and after that it was like "Why I did not think of it earlier?" Like you said, it was the simple but missing element to using 18650 cells safely/effectively in the "D" platform. Like the saying goes "necessity is the mother of invention" :grin2:

checked page 1, my order looks good. Now I just gotta try and be patient!

Well, your custom 1xD is ready!

Here is after the cut/rethread operation:

In your body I also cut the spring a little to give you a nicer spring tension:

Here is how low it seats:

Here is a quick test driving a 3D bulb:

Here I am making the Delrin Spacers:

And this is how I test the fit of them. In case you guys did not know, the ID of the mags is not very consistent, so with tons of cutoff pieces, I found two that cover the large and small diameters, and now I use them as gauges:
DSCF7851.JPG

Here are the extra 2x Delrin Spacers and extra 2x Al Spring Plugs. Note that when I build the body, I fit those pieces to the body/spring. Since I am sending you extra parts, you will have to fit them yourself. The spring plug is the easiest, as all you need to do is to lightly compress the spring's top ring with a pair of pliers until you get a snug fit. For the Delrin, if it is too loose, take a sharp knife and give the Delrin 2-3 cuts along the outside surface, from top to bottom (not around the spacer) - this will slightly displace the Delrin enough to give you a tighter fit:

Here is everything ready to go:

and in case you where curious, this is the overall length, head to tailcap:

The package is ready and postage has been paid, so it leaves Monday morning towards you 😉

WOW, that looks great Will. Thanks for cutting the switch for me as well, thats a nice added bonus! I can't wait to start on this build. Its going to be a X-Mas gift to my Dad.🙂

Cool. Non-flashaholics are the ones most impressed by the 1xD size - none have any clue that you can get something very bright in that convenient size 😉

Hello, I'd like to order a Dark Silver 1d maglite. Total is $55 with shipping. Sending payment through shortly. Please confirm. Thanks!

Your custom 1xD is ready. You did not specify that battery configuration you were going to use, so I did it short enough to take any "D" size cell/adapter, except for the 4xAA adapters that require internal boring.

Here is the original size:

End trued-up, getting ready to cut new threads:

Since you might use this with 18650 cells, I modified the switch for flat cells:

and also seated the spring deep in the tailcap:

and you got lucky and also got an extra Al plug frmo my last batch:

Ah.
How long does it take to kill a P7,if hooked up backwards?

@ will, do you have a suggestion for a good multilevel buck/boost driver to properly drive the P7 i am using in my light?

thanx!

For a 1xD driving a P7, the perfect solution is to go driver-less and simply drive it with either 3xAA or a single 18650 cell. There is really no need at all for a driver when the P7 is being driven that way, plus it is 100% efficient with no power being lost in the driver.

If you had more voltage available, like 4xAA or 4x14670, then using the hipCC (single level at 2.8Amps) or the hipFlex (multi-level) from TaskLED would be my first choices:
hipCC

hipFlex

Note that for the hipCC is fairly straight forward to wire up since it is just an ON/OFF operation, but that for the hipFlex, you need to modify the switch from ON/OFF to momentary only, as shown here:
Momentary D Mag Switch Mod

Will,
I must say I'm in total awe of your work! I've read this entire thread and your scuba light "project."
With that said, I'm ready, email on the way.

Thank you for your kind words. Email replied 😱

By the way, I have several brand new Copper and Digital Camo hosts, and one Purple "D" size host in stock. I can locally get Black, Silver, Dark Grey (Pewter), Red, and Blue hosts as well. Other colors (as in post #1) that I don't have in stock, I can get but I have to place an order and wait roughly a week to get them.

Will

Thanks, I would like a Custom 1xD set up for both D and 18650 in Copper.
Email sent.
Please send a total with the extra springs, disc, and the delrin spacer so that I may send a PayPal payment.

I recieved my black MAG 1D today. It really looks great, thanks! It is my shortest MAG 1D yet. The deep tailcap really is a cool feature. I really like the 18650 spacer and the aluminum spring cap is a simple yet fantastic mod. Thanks again!
😀
