Since you want as short as possible: Do you want part of the 18650 cell to reside inside the tailcap, or do you want the complete battery inside the main tube/host?

How about have it go in into the tail a bit but leave enough of the tube that it can still fit a regular c cell?

That'll give me another option later on that I can either fit a DX unprotected c cell or IMR c cell when it comes out.

For those wanting the shortest possible "1xD", I am introducing the "mdocod" special, named after forum member mdocod, who makes a really nice and compact 3xAA battery adapter for the "D" Mag's. You can get the adapters here:

This special 1xD package/option will be made around mdocod's 3xAA holder, so it will be smaller than the "standard" 1xD. This "mdocod" special is basically:

- extra short 1xD => basically a 1x0.75D
- spring seat "deep" in the tailcap
- switch modded for flat cells for even better contact

The spring will seat deep, like the one here in the left:

Here is the short 1x0.75D "mdocod" body, next to a regular "D" cell and mdocod's 3xAA adapter:

The total length of the tube (with the head and tail cap removed) including the switch section and threads of both ends to be about 130mm will be good (doesn't have to be exact).

Will, which c cell did you use for measurement? Besides having 18650 going into the tail.
My future plan is for short regular c cell size, if you used AW c cell for measurement, since it's longer than regular c-cell,

OK, ma_sha1 and Visible EM Wave, here is the scoop ...

The AW "C" cell measures (per AW's specs, as I don't have one) 2.08" long, so lets say 2.10" long. By comparison, a standard "C" cell is just shy of 2.0" inches.

Here is the first tube for Visible EM Wave cut for 130mm as requested - actually cut to about 131mm so that I have room to trim/true the edge:

This is about how much from the end do I need for the threads and the relief - about 0.55" to match the factory "C" - (actually less than that, but you get the idea)

With the tube cut to 130mm (well, 131mm), you have about 0.9" inches, but since we only need about 0.5" for the threads, if we only wanted a "C" cell to fit (even the AW which is 0.1" longer), we can still make the tube even shorter:

With the tube cut to "about" 130mm, this is how a protected 18650 cell would fit - this would be within the thread area, so we would need a PVC spacer to keep the cell centered and somewhat inside the tailcap (which would also need a shorter spring):

So, bottom line:
1) Visible EM Wave - I can cut the second one to 130mm, or make it shorter/longer/etc. - just let me know.

2) ma_sha1 - If only using an AW (or C cell), I can definitely make the tube shorter - almost 0.5" shorter - the spring will let you use either cell. Let me know what you would prefer.

Your can shorten the spring if no big deal, or leave it for me to do it.

Also please don't discard the tube section that's being cut-off, I'd like to keep it.

OK, I cut yours to 120mm - it is VERY short, almost two short. I had to re-seat the spring about 1/2" deeper in the tailcap. It will work with a "C" cell for shure, and it should be tight with an AW cell.
