Dark spots

Can someone explain to me why focusable beams have bad spots in them?

The reason I ask is because I want to get a Stinger XT but I'm weary about a focusable beam. Should I be worried? Is there a replacement assembly to put on the Stinger XT so that it has a clear beam without spots that does not focus?

They can be smooth. I know the Streamlight Scorpion has a smooth beam, so I would imagine the Stinger will also. It has to do with the reflector used and the quality of the reflector.

Hpefully someone with one will let us know if it is smooth or not.
