does any one have a parts list and schematic for a small dc step down converter to move 6 volts (4aaa or 4AA down to what a ls requires (2.5-4.1v I think)and running at about 250-350mA? i would greatly appriciate any links etc. I am trying to keep cost down and found a friend that can build them i just need the info...

You didn't state whether you wanted to go linear or switch mode, linear is easier, switchmode is considerably more efficient.
I used a Maxim MAX750 for my LS project, here is a link MAXIM Max750
Here is a link to the project on Quickbeams's site Bill A LS project
The chip will work with voltages from about 4V and up.
Good Luck

You might want to use the MAX887 instead; its minimum input voltage is 3.5V, letting you get the full life out of 4 batteries.

Another chip that looks interesting (for 3 cells or 4 NiMH or NiCd) is the LTC1701B
which has a 2.5 to 5.5 volts input range. It's very small, and has a high switching frequency so you can use small caps and inductors.
