Flashlight Enthusiast
Hi Everyone,
Up for review is the Dereelight C2H with the Extension tube that is now available. This light was provided by Dereelight for review.
Here are some of the specs from Dereelight:
A bit of background:
I can't find much information on when the C2H was released, as it's upgradeable form has been used for a while, but the 1xAA extension was first announced on Sept 21, according to Dereelight's website. Here's the dealer thread over at the marketplace at candlepowerforums: http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/showthread.php?t=201193
This light can be purchased from FlashlightConnection:
Well, not much else to say, forward we go.
here is the light:
the C2h comes packaged in a nice gift box, with a lanyard, instruction manual, and orings. you can purchase another reflector seperately, and an extension tube for 14500s/AAs. dereelight included both for review
in CR123A form
in AA/14500 form
rear view showing the GID clicky. it isn't the best glowing clicky around
Really sorry about that blurry picture there.. I forgot to check this picture when I took it.
It should still show you the parts of the light, though.
closeup of the head, showing the cree XR-E R2 emitter with the smooth reflector installed
closeup of the wire clip -- it appears to have been heat treated and coated
Comparisons:
White Wall Shots:
ugh JPEG compression.. ignore the odd colors.. I need a new resizing program.
left is slower shutter speed, right is faster for more beam detail.
Comparison Beamshots:
C2H is on 14500 Liion in these shots.

Runtime:
runtime on a single standard AA battery is relatively flat after the initial drop in output. at the end, the light is flashing,
I woulld suspect the drop is due to heat generated by the light.. I use a fan for cooling, but i suspect it wasn't enough. (the battery protection circuit tripped on this light)
I apologize. I don't have any AW 123s or 14500s.

The Dereelight C2H has long been regarded one of the highest quality pocket rockets one can purchase, and Dereelight decided to make their offering even more versatile with the release of an extension tube for converting the light into 1xAA/14500 format. the light is small, lightweight, and easy to grip due to the banding near the base of the head. A problem I have with the light is that the clicky is rather hard to activate, combined with the fact that it is slightly recessed for tailstanding makes for a pretty hard to activate light. on the bright side, you won't be accidentally turning this light on very often. Dereelight cut out an indent on the back to try to make it easier to activate the light.
One of the other benefits to using the c2h is their use of current based regulation for brightness regulation (as opposed to voltage(PWM) regulation). This results in a completely flicker-free output, which is easier on the eyes during long term use (e.g. reading). The only problem with this type of regulation would be on low and medium modes: there is a noticeable bluer hue to the light output.
Edit: I'm wrong, it uses PWM at 38 KHz...extremely extremely high!! no flicker can be detected at this rate, which is still easier on the eyes. there is still that blue hue at lower modes, though. hmm..
Dereelight uses the low-> medium -> high UI.. very simple and easy to use with mode memory without the strobe and sos modes some people find annyoing: the last output the light was turned off in will be the output you get when you turn it on later.
As for the output, I can consider this a "pocket" rocket: A surprisingly blindingly bright pocket light with some serious throw for this size of a light. This light is great for EDC, with its small form factor and wire clip. With it's low runtime on high, it's better to run the light on medium and low more often -- there's not too much reason to be using a EDC on modes this high-- that's when you bring out the big lights Personally, I love their use of wire clips due to their discreet profile. Another great offering from dereelight, quality shows again in their product.
As of 11/11/09: the price of this light is roughly 53$
