Desk Clock/Radio recommendations?

One of these

and then go buy a clock /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's got a good tuner, nice amp and good speaker. It also has a "aux in" for your iPod, CD, whatver. Tough to beat the sound of this guy.

They sell a more sophisticated model with a clock in it (can accept a second speaker, sub, etc.) but if you don't take advantage of the expansion options you wind up paying $100 for a clock.

Cheers,
Bob

The ultimate would be the Bose Wave Radio with CD, but that is a few hundred dollars.

I would shop the local electronics stores for small CD player/radio combinations. Many will include a clock display, I would think (it seems like almost any device with an LCD display has a clock feature). I noticed Radio Shack had a selection as did Best Buy. You can probably get something in the $30-$50 range that you would like. Brookstone probably has something like that as well.

At the office, I have a Sangean CCRadioplus from CCrane. Good sound, great reception, and ports for an external AM antenna (great for office use), Aux which is connected to my PC and all 400 of my CDs in .mp3 format, and even a 6V port for an emergency led light! It can run using regular D cells or rechargeables, with no additional charger hardware required (they charge internally via the AC plug). It also has weather/TV radio reception, and has an led-lit clock w/alarm. Seperate bass/treble controls and 5 radio station preset buttons. Many other features I'm not even remembering, like recording, etc. Check it out. Very solid, quality construction; best radio I ever saw/had, which includes the vaunted SuperRadio.

I'd go with GalvanickLucifer's recommendation. If he feels strongly enough about it to post, it must be good /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've heard good things about the Cambridge Soundworks, though I haven't tried one in person.

+1 on the Bose - it's insanely expensive for the category, but the quality is startling. I can't say enough about how much better it sounds than any other desk or small shelf system you've ever heard. It's not as good as a system with a separate sub-woofer you tuck in a corner, but short of that, it's hard to find better.

It's clearly overkill, and depending on how public your space is, might be a target for theft.

You also can't go too far wrong going to your local Costco and buying whatever small shelf/desk setup they've got. Price will be good, quality will be OK+ and their 'return it forever' policy is amazing if you decide you don't really like it in six months.

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I may have found something. Anyone have any experience with the JVC EX-A1? Seems attractive to me. At first I though the wooden speaker cone thing was just a gimmick. I thought why in the world would anyone even go through the trouble of trying to make a wooden speaker driver but the more I read the more I want to hear it for myself.

As for Bose, I worked in the only Bose Factory store in Hawaii when I was 21(at the time it was the first and only Bose factory store in the world). Did professional installs of Commercial Bose equipment in hotels, churches and night clubs(TF analysis is a pain!). I sold Bose consumer equipment after that in AZ. Helped build a couple Bose demo rooms in Phoenix(oh, the black magic in those rooms are incredible). Bose does an incredible job at what they do. IMHO, what they do is not electronic or audiophile excellence.

Cambridge stuff is very good. If Henry Kloss had the half the marketing sense of Amar Bose, Cambridge soundworks would be twice as big as Bose. Perhaps that is why they are now with Creative Labs? I once had the 88CD. It is a great product. Sounds as good as the Waveradio and is not so minimalistic. You actually feel you are getting your money's worth. If I don't get anything else It'll be another Cambridge for me.

The JVC EX-A1 is bigger than I want but wow the features. Even the model below it, FS-S77, looks good. Almost anykind of DVD and CD playback. It may not playback VCDs. I guess I can;t have everything. I just hook up the projector and Voila, instant theatre /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BobVa, Tivoli looks nice. I'll check it out.

Phaserburn, Man, CCrane never ceases to amaze me with the diversity of product they carry. I would have never thought to check CCrane for a desk radio. I'll check it out.

Keep the suggestions coming! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I am especially interested if anyone has experienced the EX-A1 first hand. I could always go see one first hand in AZ. In Hawaii, I am not so fortunate.

Best regards,
Randy

The Tivoli Model One is a Henry Kloss design, btw.

I'd also give high marks to the JVC shelf system, but if you get one of those, consider replacing the speakers with a set of Minimus 7's (or whatever they're called now - the ones that are seven inches tall in an all metal housing) from Radio Shack. You can pick those up for $75 when they have one of their periodic 2 for 1 sales. They make a nice upgrade to any compact stereo. (Note this applies to the regular JVC - I've not heard the sake-soaked wooden cone speakers which are supposed to be pretty good.)

Cheers,
Bob
