Devices with lots of batteries

The January 30 issue of Nature has an article on autonomous submersibles. One is “Autosub” developed by Southampton Oceanography Centre. It is powered by 5,000 standard D cell batteries!

The article states that Lithium batteries would be too expensive. But why not AGM auto batteries (assuming you want to stay off the shelf)? They must be using graduate students or some other form of slavery to change batteries.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

Oh dear, I hope they aren't all connected in series.

The lead-acid types may be too heavy. You want those submersibles to come back up sometime.
