Did I get the "cheap" Eneloop charger?

I'm seeing that there are 2 versions of the Eneloop charger sold by Sanyo.

Mine came with one that has one green LED in the bottom center, and a cover that slides up and down. While the other says Quick Charger on it, and has 4 LEDs.

Is mine a cheap timed version? Or is it actually a peak sensing charger?

More info needed.

What's the model number. It could be stamped anywhere, check the bottom label.

where is the one with 4 LEDs? I haven't seen it, it may be a new model. As far as I can tell, even the one with 1 LED and sliding cover is smart, it just does not have LEDs for each cell.

I just bought the 4AA charging pack at Wallmart while on a trip. The charger model number is NC-MQN05. I can't find this on the Eneloops website. The 4 cell charger listed there is MQN04. The spec sheet for that charger says, "Charging control method: Timer cut". The little manual that came with my charger doesn't list a "charging control method", but it does say "charge time will depend on the remaining charge in the battery..." This would suggest that it IS sensing charge.

The one with the single LEDand sliding cover will charge any number of batteries and if you put one in thats almost full it will terminate the charge in a short amount of time. Less than 2 hrs when I tried it. So that indicates it is cutting off on somethings besides time.

Mine says on the back of the charger NC-MQN05U

Yes, it's a smart charger (peak V detect) and has independent channels. As far as I can tell it does trickle charge as well, after the peak is detected...not sure what current the trickle charge is.

The only thing I don't like is that it only has the one LED. The LED goes out only when the last battery is charged, so you don't know which ones may have peaked already. It's a great charger though...I have two of them.

I just purchased the same charger yesterday. Does it charge all batteries in it at the same time or one at a time? Can you mix AAs and AAAs while charging?

Yep, it charges all the batteries at the same time, and you can mix and match. There's two different "+" contacts for each bay, so the charger will still charge the AA and AAA batteries at different rates, even when mixed.

So, if you had two AAs in with considerably different degrees of discharge, it would likely charge until the battery with the greatest charge going in was complete and shut off leaving the other with a less than full charge, correct?

No...this is an independent channel charger...it'll monitor each battery separately. When a battery peaks, it'll stop charging that battery only...the rest will continue to charge.

Since the green light only goes out when ALL the batteries have finished, you have no way of knowing which battery/batteries have already finished charging....you have to wait until all the batteries finish.

So are there any major differences between the Eneloop charger (GES-MQN05) and Sanyo's plain old charger that amazon sells (GES-MQH02WU-S)?

Which is better and why?

I also wonder how come it's so hard to find Sanyo refresh chargers in the US ...

I'm trying to decide between these chargers and Sony's LCD charger (BCG-34HRMF4) for my dad ...

Thanks
