difference in bat wing and lambertian ls\'s

I understand that there are two different types of luxeon's out there. What is the primary difference between the two. does one have a tighter beam? i assume that the batwing is the wide angle beam and the highdome lambertian is the narrow

In the LS with optics, both versions have the same viewing angle, 10%, as that's a function of the collimator, which I believe is the same for both.

Without optics, the rounder Lambertian radiator provides a viewing angle of 140 degrees, versus 110 degrees with the flatter batwing.

Batwing radiators tend to concentrate the light more in the center, and have an "uneven" pattern on the periphery; Lambertian radiators have a more uniform pattern.

Search for "Lambertian" on this forum from last summer, and you should find some pictures showing the difference.

Or go here and look at the charts on pages 6 and 7. The patterns refer to the intensity of light as a function of angle from the center of the beam.

Thank you gentleman, i am slowly but surely learning about the great art and science of torches! I apprieciate your patients with the new members on the list

Batwing LS? Now that sounds like my kind of light.

In my experience, the batwing emitter has a brighter edge and a dimmer center.
On a spatial distribution chart, the edges peak up higher than the central peak so the graph looks like a bat flying toward you.
