Would it be possible to "paint" some diffussive material on the center of an emitter dome to limit the spill while still allowing the side beams to get to the reflector?

I understand that an aspheric lens can eliminate spill but what about this method?

You'd either paint it with some opaque white paint (logically. I've never tried, so no idea if it will work or do something else completely) or just live with the spill. I think if you diffused the emitter dome, the spill would just have a softer border.

Hi gcbryan,

I dont think this is going to give the effect that you are looking for. I dont see how this would eliminate any spill at all. As the post before mine stated I think defusing the dome would only soften the beam at best. Also usinig paint would probly be rough looking and add artifacts.

The only other options I know of to eliminate spill are to add a circular covering that extends out past the bezel of the light ( like sticking a piece of pvc over the end. Or if the emitter is a single die like an XRE, I have removed the dome from one in a maglite and it gave a similar effect to the aspherical lens, one laser like beam with almost no spill.
