Disassembling an Inova X5

there's a post somewhere on how to do this by filling it with water and popping it in the freezer a coupl'a times. It goes something like: fill with water, cap tightly, put in Ziplok bag, pop in freezer, repeat until head is loose). The expanding water pushes the LED assembly forward.

I want to place better rated UV LEDs in it. I hope the water/freeze method doesn't harm it.

I can't speak for the X5, but it worked perfectly on my X0 so I could drop in a nice LuxIII. Just make sure all the air bubbles are out when you are putting the water in and go for it. Look here for that thread on taking them apart.

Nice. Did it work when you put it back toghether? The other guy
(KT) said that freezing fried his light. That's why I haven't opened my X1 yet. Wanted to add glow paint to make the lens glow. A bright blue X1 would be pretty cool, too.

Yes, mine did work when I put it back together. I'm not sure how the X1 is done, but in the X0 there is a metal slug that the converter board sits in on one side and a sort of centering pedestal on the other side that holds the emitter in place and aligns the bottom tail of the optics. What this means is that there is relatively little pressure on the converter board, but on the other side the optics put enough pressure to crush the emitter. If you look in the bottom right picture you can see that the dome fell off. One thing to remember though is that the X1 has a 5mm LED instead of a Lux so it probably won't suffer the same fate.

After I was done taking it apart I cleaned it off will demonized water figuring that would take off any excessively conducting things from the tap water and let it dry for about a week… actually that was because I was too busy. In any case you definitely want it dry before you put it back together or you will fog up the lens every time it gets hot and/or short something out.

Wallace, the thought did cross my mind briefly but I don't want to be responsible if the next one doesn't fall apart as easily. I don't want to have to buy someone a replacement.

Greenlight: I'm pretty sure it would be a lot less painful on the X1 because the 5mm LEDs are must more robust than a Luxeon is. Even if something goes poof its only a $17 light anymore, heck I've even seen it for less every once in awhile. Go for it, get that bucket out and freeze that puppy, you know you want to… /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nana.gif

Mines not a $17 light. I have the UV model X5 and I want to upgrade the 395nm LEDs to 380nm.

I just found a Nightcutter 5CSI. I've decided not to do the mod and just buy the exact thing I was looking for.

Thanks for the help anyways.

Pitbull: Can you post some sort of review ot the Nightcutter 5CSI when you get it? I mean can you post pics of beamshots showing how it shines on the dollar UV markers, cat urine or dog urine etc.

I am also looking for a good UV light. Thanks!

I should be getting it Wednesday. I'll post some side-by-side comparisons with the Inova X5T UV.
