Been seeing some comments about the lack of decent lanyard options for the spy, so I thought I'd share what has been working well for me.

First take any standard lanyard and crack open the plastic retainer (circled in red below).

Make or purchase a paracord lanyard to your liking.
Lighthound has some nice tutorials and paracord if you prefer to DIY.

Re-Tie the thin braided line into your paracord lanyard, set with a small
dab of epoxy.

attatch lanyard to spy. (It will work great with jch79's Ti Bead)

:naughty:

Is there any place that sells nylon wrapped kevlar cord that is thin enough? I'd love to be able to weave that into a paracord lanyard, or maybe just with the kevlar cord.

The abrasion resistance of Kevlar is quite poor so the material is not ideal for lanyard loops. Spectra and Dyneema are a little better but far from ideal.
High tenacity Polyester has signifficantly better abrasion resistance and is probably the best option available at present for the purpose, among synthetic braids.
I have plenty of black 1.5 mm Polyester braid and am happy to mail a few meters to anyone who would like to try. Just send me a PM.

I do some work with paracord. I've been making some lanyards with ti beads lately. If someone can find something great for the thin part, I'll be happy to come up with something good.

Loop, fob, handle? What would work best on the spy? ti bead would be a prereq if its going on an 007

I dont have a place to post pictures right now, but if someone can assist, I'll send you some pics of recent work.

Edit: Any fishermen here? Maybe a piece of steel leader coated in plastic? Do they come thin enough?

That's why I mentioned Nylon Wrapped Kevlar. Yes, raw kevlar (light yellow in color) is extremely prone to fraying and ripping apart.

It offers the best of both worlds, the sheer tensile strength of Kevlar, with the wear resistance of composite fiber.

That 1.5mm Polyester braid sounds interesting, though

Where do you get some of this magical stuff and what size do you think we need?

Well, my Salomon shoe's quick laces are nylon wrapped kevlar. They're too thick, though. Of course, I got them snagged on something sharp hiking, and once the raw yellow kevlar was exposed, it started fraying. Took a long time to actually unravel all the way and snap. It's was funny how long it was holding on with a hair thin strand. Strong stuff, but yeah, not very abrasion resistant. I was hoping they made the stuff in thinner diameter, it would be perfect.

They do have kevlar thread available. I suppose if one could take the monofilament core out of smaller cord, and then somehow thread in a few strands of kevlar thread, that could do the trick, but It would be a monumental PITA to accomplish for any length over a few inches.

There is black kevlar thread available, but I don't think it's wrapped in anything protective, I think it's still just raw kevlar that's dyed.

Of course steel braid would be the strongest, but I want something very strong, but not so much so that it would damage the SPY 007 in any way.

I just double checked my Salomon kevlar quick laces against my 007' s lanyard hole. LOL, oh man, they are sooooo close to being able to fit. If the lanyard hole was just a half milimeter larger it could fit through with a standard lanyard loop.

A single cord of the Salomon kevlar lace could fit through, but it would be a permanent attachment and would only fit through once.

It looks like there is some jewelry string and wire thats multi stand and pretty thin. I might look into getting a spool of that stuff and see how it does.

My original equipment lanyards have lasted for many years.. I'm still using the original ones from my original spy 005s.. and they dont show any signs of wear. Maybe, like the original post said, get the same thing, break it apart and use that string.

Dave, where do the OE lanyards come from?
