Anyone here considered or built anything like these commercial focus/video lights?

http://www.backscatter.com/HostedSt...1op=cn&s1=focus light&s6op=eq&s6=SHOP&sop=AND

The special features of these are that they have a very wide beam, high light output, defined color temperature and sometimes also a dimmer.

Basically naked LEDs without reflects could do, i think the brand above has made a shallow reflector in the heat sink though.

Any suggestions on designs or modification candidates?

Cheers

  • very wide beam
  • high light output
  • defined color temperature
  • dimmer (variable power)
Nothing on this list is difficult with multiple LEDs seems a straightforward MAG mod. Choice of LED might be more a function of the color then lumen output to a lesser extent.

You might look using a single SST-50 or SST-90 to reduce the complexity of the build.

Check out the aspheric mag and ring of light in the link in my sig line.

Cool, how do you use the aspheric lens in the wide option, screwing it closer, or do you just remove it?

The closer the LED is to the lens the wider the beam angle.
Move it back to the correct focal distance for the lens and you get a tight focused beam.
