Do you ever use the SOS mode on flashlights?

The only light I have with SOS is a Photon Freedom. I've never used it, but it doesn't bother me that it's there as it doesn't get in the way of the main features.

I don't like lights where I have to cycle through a strobe. If it has one out of the way like NT, then that's great. However if I was in a situation where I might need SOS and the light had another strobe, I would go for the slowest strobe the light had, as that is going to last a lot longer (several days instead of just a few). The faster and longer the flashes, the more battery it will use up.

I don't even own a light that has SOS.

I have a couple that have strobe modes, but they are bedside/annoy the cats lights.

What I want is a light with low, medium, and high.
If they can make a light with a gazillion modes, why is it so hard to get one with three simple modes?

This one time at band camp...I was stranded in the woods. Try as I might my Turbo, Hi, Med, Lo and Flash modes couldn't attract any help. So I used SOS mode and :poof: instant rescue!

Pointless to me, except maybe in a true emergency situation to keep signaling while I slept or something like that. Otherwise it's just annoying. I avoid any light that has it in the main mode sequence, i.e. hi>lo>sos. If it's hidden like in a Quark Tactical UI then hey why not have it in there.

Edit: Actually, I can now think of no reason to have SOS, even on my Quark lol. It has the beacon modes, which would conserve more power while still signaling at full brightness.

This was a hotly-debated topic a few years ago when this thread was started, but it's not so much of an issue these days. Perhaps this is because most makers have learned to hide seldom-used features in the UI, so users don't encounter them accidentally and get annoyed by them.

This thread would have died a normal death but for the fact that it was necro-bumped yesterday. It's out of date in many respects, so I'm closing it now; but if any member wishes to start a new and more up-to-date thread on the topic, please feel free to do so.
