Does anybody know what\'s inside a 3-led headlamp?

I mean the Petzl Tikka-like headlamps that use 3 AAA batteries. I'm really curious of what's inside. Is it just a resistor in serie with the leds or do they use some real led driver IC's

If it's a 3AAA light, it is more likely a resistored light. If you have one on hand you can measure the REVERSE resistance. If it's a resistored light, you will get "over range", but if it actually has some IC inside, you will get a significant leak current. Old mechanical multimeter will do better in this kind of tests.

My 'normal' Tikka and Zipka (and their Asian copies) do not have even a resistor, they rely solely on the LED's and the AAA cells internal resistance.
I used to use a Zipka with almost dead cells for reading.

Edit: Sorry I forgot that my Tikka is a 'modded' one for use with almost empty cells. Normal Tikka has a 3.3Ohm resistor.

It depends on the headlamp.

Not sure what's in a Tikka, but I have a couple of Zipka+s, and they have multiple light levels/flash accessible via a single button (not a switch). This means there is driver circuitry in there.

Yes, thats why I wrote the 'normal' version. That should mean the Zipka and Tikka without 'plus'.
Sorry for not expresing myself clearly enough. The plus versions have a PWM.

There is a reisitor inside the Tikka/Zipka models that will drop the voltage to 3.6V
