This is my first post here, but I have been a bit of a flashaholic since I was a kid and have aquired quite a few flashlights over the years. I have learnt a lot from reading these Forums, so thanks for that.lovecpf

What I don’t understand is the love for LOTS-OF-LUMENS-Flood lights.

Indoors, when I want lots of flood, I switch on a light😳.If I don’t want to wake the kids my Arc Premium has more than enough lumens. As a matter of fact if it didn’t have such a blue tint:sick2:, I wouldn’t have bought 2 x Fenix LODs, 2 x LD01 SS, Liteflux LF2X and now a neutral Preon Revo SS looking for an “Arc with a nice tint”. Runtime isn't a problem indoors as I use eneloops and have access to a charger.

Outdoors I love throw. I loved incans in this sense and was disappointed with LEDs until I got my first Surefire TIR (E1B). The beam was finally comparable to incans.🙂 More lumens here give more throw and I find the TIR beam very useful and don’t put on my F04 diffuser (even indoors). My favourite light at present is my LX2 which I am running on Tenergy LiFePO4s, but I love my E1Bs and my E1L as well. I dont like the mixed throw and flood lights like my NDI R2 or my titanium neutral 4Sevens AA mini very much. If I really needed more flood outdoors (hasnt happened yet) I would buy a headlamp.

So would somebody enlighten me on the reason for LOTS-OF-LUMENS-Flood lights.😕

It's all a matter of what you need to SEE. If you are looking to pick out an object at a long range then throw is what you need. On the other hand, if you need to check out your entire backyard quickly, then flood is the answer. Another example - if you need to see what is at the end of an alley, but are not really concerned with what may lie between you and the end of that alley, then throw is the answer. If you want to see the end of the alley, plus what may be lie in wait between you and the end of that alley, then a flood such as an MC-E or XM-L is what you need.

Funniest typo I have seen in a while... 🙂

Flood is awesome for 95 percent of anything I need a flashlight for. Typically, I am not looking at (or for) things a great distance away so I don't need a lot of throw. What I do need when walking though the woods, or searching for an object on the ground nearby - is a great deal of light that spreads out over a larger area. I hate playing "follow the bouncing spot" that a throwy-type light projects and constantly having to move the light around to see what I am trying to focus on.

Throwers have their purpose, absolutely. But in the end, for my needs and uses - a floody beam is MUCH preferable.

Oh, and the fact that the woods are much less scary at night when you have a "wall" of light around and infront of you - rather than a teeny, tiny pencil-thin beam that pierces the dark like a toothpick. 🙂

Yeah, it's mostly that last point I think.

I have lights with both flood and throw. I find flood most useful when working on the car, under the sink, or looking out the back window. If I'm going to look farther away I choose a light with throw. Simple as that. Some lights are so powerful, that while being considered floody, they also throw with pure horsepower. Those lights are too bright for under the sink use. Elektrolumens Blaster New Generation would be a light like that. An ROP with a deep reflector is *bright* and will throw, yet there is enough flood to see left and right as well. That too, is a light I would not take under the sink. It's good to have some of each.

I LOVE FOOD LOL
there now that I got that out of my system, I used to love throwers. I have a Pelican7060 led and one other are the only two I kept from the batch I had and I'll tell you why.
I'm a carpenter not in law enforcement, throwers are fun wow lights that throw 300feet + 170 lumens
A great wow light.
But I prefer my flood lights because I need to inspect and repair things. I wouldn't be a good carpenter if I said yep your baseboards look fine from across the street 😉
Attics, basements, and when I'm on board and secures for the city, typically have little to no light and I need to see were I'm walking and what's near bye (they call them squatters for a reason) :-o
Sometimes we clear the buildings ourselves and nothing takes the fight out of trespassers like 1000 lumens :naughty:

Agree with several others here. There are times for flood and times for throw. If I'm playing ball in the backyard with my dog at night, a throwy light makes it very difficult to find the ball. My Eagletac P20C2 lights up the entire yard and makes it much easier. If I'm out on the lake and need to spot a buoy or the shore from a good distance, flood is useless and I use my M2XC4 for throw.

I use a torch for cross country running and general use. For running you don't want a narrow pencil that bounces around all over the place, and does not illuminate the ground in front of your feet. You need a compromise, some throw with some spill. Too much flood and it feels like you are in a small dome of light surrounded by darkness, eery. Some torches throw further than you can see, which is a bit pointless.
