I am interested in using Cree MX6 LEDs to replace the incandescent bulbs in my RV.

There are other variants of different color temperature. Search mx6 on Digikey and you'll see what I mean.

The reason I want to use these LEDs is because of their high efficiency. Nearly 100 lumens per watt, depending on the color temp, etc.

I'd like to drive them with an inexpensive driver. The best I've found is the MR16: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13557

I built a circuit with the above MR16 driver and 4 LEDs in a 2x2 configuration with a common center bar. It worked great for a couple hours when 1 row of the LEDs burnt out.

WHY ?

Prior to burning out, I measured the current through the 4 LEDs to be 650ma, right where is should be. The voltage was about 6.8V, again, right about where it should be. Each LED is capable of handling more current than what the MR16 can provide. 1000 ma versus 650 ma.

Why did my LEDs burn out ?

Thanks
