We were having a talk at work and the 57 year old woman I sit next to thought that the Moon was bigger than the Earth and that they both sat in the middle and the Sun went around us. This is a woman who works in the accounts department of a large multinational company.

Not being funny but.....

Don't think I'll bother trying to explain the difference between LED and incandescent.

Is her name Mary Agnes Ptolemy by any chance? Lot's of time traveling going on where you work?

Just to let you know. Your title was changed because it was offensive enough to merit the change.

I don't know what's going on, but I didn't start the thread so why is the title edit comment in my post? And seems like my post was edited???????

I'm not surprised. Just read some of the comments people leave on youtube, for example. It's incredible how ignorant a large part of the population is. I'm sure some people would still argue the world is flat.

Moon bigger than earth - no

Moon and earth sitting in the middle, and everything else goes around us? Well, that sure as heck isn't the simplest 'frame of reference', as we all know, BUT it CAN be a frame of reference

Heck, as someone here has in their sig "why yes, the world does revolve around me, I get to choose the frame of reference"

BigIron, I edited the original and posted the explanation. After posting it, I noticed that your post had appeared before mine, and still carried the original title. My edit of your post was to remove the title before the next poster carried it forward.

One of my favorite quotes, attributed to Einstein (and paraphrased):

"Only two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not so sure about the Universe."

:grin2:

I guess the 57 year old lady might be more ignorant than stupid, but...

It never ceases to amaze me the things that people should know... and don't know.

:sigh:

me i dont think life is all about how smart a person is. but rather how nice a person is.but maybe thats just me. i had no idea what size the moon is. doubt ill ever go there so im probably save

You're kidding, right? You have to be kidding. Please tell me you're kidding.

what's wrong with you people anyone can see by merely looking up at the sky that the sun orbits around the earth..luckily that big turtle holds the earth up in space where it belongs..

I partly agree with you raggie, but I think what really matters is not how smart people are, but how nice they are to me. ;)

Wow. So in essence this board can be used to play a cyber version of "hot potato!" That's pretty funny in an odd way.

Raggie, as my grandma said, "the best way to figger out a person is to see how they treat their animals". I haven't found a better way yet.

It doesn't surprise me, either. We are probably as far as we are because of the few...not the many. 'Jay Walking' is a good example. It makes me choke.

I didn't think it was to bad that she thought the moon was bigger but when she said that we sit in the centre and everything else revolved around us !!!
