Since I was never able to find a Sanyo MQN05 charger, I bought a Duracell Mobile Charger off eBay. When I opened the plastic clamshell, the odor caught me off guard. Has anyone else noticed this? I don't recognize the smell, but it has a very strong "chemical" odor to it.

Many new electronic products smell like overheated components and "chemicals." I, too, was surprised how my two new UPS units stunk up the entire rooms. After several weeks the fragrance is diminishing.

Has anybody noticed that some new devices using switching power supplies run quite warm or hot? I couldn't believe how hot the DVDs were after playing in an RCA DRC8335 digital tuner/VCR/DVD recorder.

I've read about recalls due to potential fire hazards in some new gear.

And, yes, what is that strong hot electronics odor from new products?

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have the charger. Definitely a step up in features from the MQN06. I was just curious about the smell; I've opened my share of electronics, and this was a new one on me! Almost acidic...

they did a study a long time ago, about NEW PCs and the toxic slime that burned off them , it was interesting. even one office with all new PCs they couldnt figure out why everone in the office was getting sick.
they suggested that some minor ventilation would be appropriate till the stuff all leached out and burned in.
they tested lots of stuff, and found at that after 1 Year the difference was huge, and that after 1 year it wasnt as much worth worrying about.

I think it is largly the smell of cheap printed circuit board material used in consumer grade products.

My energizer 15 minute charger "smells" also, this should disappear after a month or so.
