I got myself 2 packs of AA & one pack of AAA batteries the other day for half the price at Staples (see "tile name"). I use a Powerex MH-C9000 charger for my NiMH batteries; the AA's are 2400mAh, so I would charge them at 1200mA & discharge them at 600mA correct?. The AAA's are 800mAh so I would charge those at 400mA & discharge at 80mA correct?. Prior to these I was using first generation Eneloops.

Why are only the the AA's a higher capacity and the AAA stay the same?. Is that the maximum that they can hold regardless?; I don't understand that. My first generation Eneloops were 2000mAh for AA's & 800mAh for the AAA's; & I got those several years ago.

There are 3 types of eneloop with the following rating:
Eneloop lite AA:1000mAh, AAA:600mAh
Eneloop AA:2000mAh, AAA:800mAh
Eneloop XX AA:2550mAh, AAA:950mAh

Re: Duracell Rechargeable preCharged batteries with Ion Core & Duralock Technology

Okay so the Eneloops I have are 2nd generation then, my mistake. I'm still curious, why are the Duracell AA's a higher capacity, but the AAA's stay the same?. Why don't they have an improved capacity size greater than 800mAh?.

Re: Duracell Rechargeable preCharged batteries with Ion Core & Duralock Technology

Capacity does not change with generation, only with the type.

Re: Duracell Rechargeable preCharged batteries with Ion Core & Duralock Technology

After I drain these batteries through normal use, should I be doing a break-in on them?.

I'll take new batteries and do a discharge on my Maha C-9000, or LC BC-700 and see what I see. I'll then do the break-in and then begin using them.

Yeah, I always do a discharge prior to doing a break-in, even though the manual says that it not necessary to do so. I'm using the one pack of Duracell AA's for my Klarus ST10 flashlight and camera; the other two packs, I'll do a discharge and break-in on them and report the results.

From what I have heard, the AA batteries are Eneloop XX, and the AAA batteries are just plai. eneloops. In other words, they are unchanged from before.

You would think that they would improve the AAA's also. I try to avoid electronics that use AAA's as much as possible, considering their capacity.

I run an AAA Eneloop Gen. 2 in an Olight i3s and I get pretty good output for a keychain light and about an hour, or slightly more, on high.

Don't discount the AAAs. Sure, they're not the best, but that's why we have AAs, Cs and Ds, right?

Right tool for the right job.

Re: Duracell Rechargeable preCharged batteries with Ion Core & Duralock Technology

Never discharged any Eneloop type in years of use and never had an issue and my charger has a discharge function.I never read it on any instruction sheet so i never bothered.

Re: Duracell Rechargeable preCharged batteries with Ion Core & Duralock Technology

Yeah, I agree with you Chris; it all depends on what they'll be used for.

@mcnair55
When you do a break-in, the first thing it does is charge the batteries for 16h at a low current. So it gives me piece of mind that if the battery is depleted, then it will get a perfectly complete charge; hopefully improving capacity by the end.

Yes but i am not bothered as after years of use i have never had an issue and the instruction sheet never said i should so i did not and mine are working perfectly happy.

Re: Duracell Rechargeable preCharged batteries with Ion Core & Duralock Technology

Fair enough, it certainly saves time. :)

Well as it works for you, would i be harming my cells if i tried a discharge and refuel just to see if it pumped extra life usage into an old set.I am quite happy to have a go and if it goes pear shape no big deal as i have had my monies worth over the years.

How say you?

Re: Duracell Rechargeable preCharged batteries with Ion Core & Duralock Technology

To be honest mcnair55, I haven't been on the this forum for a year or more; my knowledge is just from what I've read on the forums in the past. Including the reading of the Powerex MH-C9000 manual and F.A.Q. which I have both printed out on paper, and keep in a binder. Then there's the help that I've received from the more technically inclined people than myself, who are registered to this site.

Regarding your old set, you might want to read the MH-C9000 manual, under MODES OF OPERATION where it tells you about Battery Rescue Steps.

Re: Duracell Rechargeable preCharged batteries with Ion Core & Duralock Technology

I just started the break-in on the AAA's; I'll report the results when their done.
