DX 30W HID

Probably a trickle charger. I'm thinking of re-fitting it with a different battery pack though, so it's not an issue.

Great idea! With a Li-ion or Li-Poly pack it should charge a lot quicker than 16 hours & be 50-75% less heavy.

Even better: A123's new cells, and a fast charge at 5 amps will do the trick :D

Plus it's an inherently-safe chemistry, less risk of meltdown, plus better handling of HID's very high power requirements. I have driven 18650's at 4 amps before (I dreamed up the ROP and its lithium version) and the HID is only expected to be ~3A, so technically Li-ion can handle it, but chaining 3-4 cells together in a single pack without protection circuits isn't 100% confidence inspiring.

As I know HIDs, the batt pack is most of the weight.. 60-70% weight reduction is quite likely. I had a "100W" spotlight that shed about that much weight after conversion to HID and a NiMH 10-cell pack. SLA's are heavy, must be all the lead ;)

Posted this on here awhile back, nobody seemed to know any thing about it.

The general responce I got, was "forget this, look at a N30." But with Amondotech gone and no idea when Battery Junction will start offering the N30's again, this might be worth looking into.
