I'm a relatively new poster here but occasional lurker, so please go easy on me. I don't consider myself a "flashaholic" but have started to accumulate a number of lights over the past few years. Most of them are on the lower end though. In a recent random binge on DX I threw in what was advertised as a Romisen RC-R5 1AA light. I have two other Romisen lights from ShiningBeam that I have been very impressed with for the price, so I anticipated I would like this one as well.
DX SKU # 135422
Unfortunately this one was not even close to the quality of the other 2 I own. Finish was marred by tool marks and the internals looked really cheap. The threads on the tail cap were extremely gritty and I believe partially stripped. Inserting a battery to test it out, it only works intermittently. It seems like the threads on the tail cap are not allowing it to completely screw on (maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a turn short) and so it's not making complete contact with the battery. Even if it had worked properly, it has one of the worst designed clips I've ever seen on a light. The clip goes around the tail cap and must be held perfectly in place when the cap is screwed into the light. It took me nearly 5 minutes to screw the tail cap back on the first time! I'm sure I could try and return it, but I'm not really sure it's worth the hassle for $15 and I consider it a tax/punishment for being cheap. I posted a review on the website a few weeks ago, but of course DX appears to have decided not to publish it (no critical reviews allowed it seems...). This is unfortunate because I've purchased 6 or 7 other lights from them that I've been very satisfied with.
I mainly wanted to make this post as a warning to others. If you're considering cheap lights on DX these have been much better for me:
SKU 100162, 160509, 47702, 24126
Note to mods: feel free to move to light reviews, but I'm not allowed to post there yet (I guess I'm too new for that)
