My brother and his son are running their HVAC 2.5 & 3 ton Heat Pump AC units with their generators. Anyone here?
Before AC, startup is 76amps and runs about 8-9amps!
After start up is 17-18amps !!! The run amps stay the same 8-9amps.

Hooked up the generator and performed a power outage scenario, turned off the main breaker and all the 220v. Got it running and all the 110v breakers are on, no problems - 2 fridges, internet, lights, TVs, all the bedrooms, everything 110v - all good.

Turned on the air handler first 220v and got that running, it only pulls around 3 amps, only a fan. Then the outside AC unit, flipped the breaker and turned down the temp, blam, AC is running. Generator made a small bump when the AC started up and kept on going, no issues.
Tested the amp draw on the generator = pulling half load, around 20-22 amps with just about everything running in the house.

His generator is a 5500

My 4-ton system was about 121 starting Amps before soft-start installation and was 58 Amps after.

More than a year later I update. I've had a Costco Firman 9400/7500 Gas 8450/7500 LP for several years now wired in for Deploy/Plug In 50A cord and go. and have installed the micro-air EasyStart Soft Starter and am very happy.
