eBay HID searchlight? Just a thor??? $300???

It looks like a Thor HID mod to me you can see the D2S lamp..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

If it was just a regular THOR, he would probably have more than 2 to sell. He speaks of candlepower like its a 35W HID. THOR brags 10MIL. Talks of color unlike THOR. Probably a modified version. I would email and ask specifics to test if its a real HID.

Could be from someone on this board. No one else does these mods but us loonies.

Curious as to why someone would jump the bid from $50 to $300. A little weird. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

ok next question who would want 7 million cp that he claims over the 10 million the regular thor gets for $250 more than a regular thor? =\ HID is cool but not that cool to ME I guess

The listing says HID.
7 million cp is closer to HID actual, than 10 million is to stock.
The bid was jumped by out bidding a proxy bid placed by the opening bidder.
The seller is probably one of us loonies.

Well, i say a 35watt Havis Shields would be a lot better than a modified 35watt HID Thor if the modified thor were going to cost me $300+

Shane

I agree with you Hallis. $300 is a lot for a modded Thor. The HS for $200 is a great deal, even without batteries. Plus, it doesn't weigh as much as the Thor /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

I saw that auction too, and I have to admit after seeing the bids I am considering getting yet another Costco Thor, modding it for 35w HID and seeing how much it could fetch. Sure some might prefer a Havis Shields, but for many people a totally self contained light might be preferable. Looking around at prices for an X990 (also 35w HID) I see them selling for $450-$500. A modded Thor is really a pretty decent light, and at $300-$400 the price seems about right for the market. Ballasts and bulbs are not cheap.

Hey, he even put the ballast on the bottom like I did (but it's not me selling). The Thor HID has a better spot than the x990, but the Thor is the size of a small tank.

i felt it my duty to email the bidder and tell them that they're getting screwed, either they'll listen to me or they're just there to pump up the auction bid.

Shane

Hallis,
Since he bid the value to himself, is he screwing himself?
In a free market an item is worth what a person is willing to pay.
Not everybody has the skill, time or interest to build an HID Thor.
It may be 'worth' much more to this person than $300.

I'm considering building & offering the same.
I hope bidders place a higher value on the finished product than the parts cost alone.
I believe my time, knowledge & skills add to the overall value.

I agree - $300 is more than we would pay, but to a non-modder type who doesn't know about $25 Costco Thors, it's probably a decent deal.

The stock Thor beat out the HS HID in the recent shootout, with a properly focused HID it likely beats the snot out of it. Also, there's something to be said for having an integrated one piece design rather than a separate homemade battery pack.

I'm considering the same as Theepdinker - it would be nice to have the flashlight cash flow go the other direction for once.

p.s. Ballast on the bottom is just plain goofy. I don't understand why the seller didn't do their homework to fit it in the more than adequate space inside. Oh well, I guess that's why I'm a perfectionist...

Looking through his other auctions, it looks like he's into some pretty nice stuff. Remastered CDs, McIntosh car amp, tubes for high end home audio...

If one were so inclined, one could probably email the winner of the sellers previous 'Thor/HID' auction here.

If one were so inclined.

Edit - the high bidder of the current auction recently won a 12" signaling 1,000 watt spotlight as well.

my phillips 35 watt ballast would not fit inside a thor.

so it is mounted on the bottom.

the way the ballast power wires and bulb wires are laid out
alowed me to have no exsposed wires.

and the ballast is black metal and the thor is black so it looks kool.

you have to look at the bottom of the thor to see the ballast any way.

my 50 watt xenlight ballast will fit inside a thor.

the xenlight ballast is all plastic on the outside(no exsposed metal heatsink or plate)(I can not spell right now)
so I wonder how it disapates heat ?

so should I wait for a 15 mcp thor or just install the 50 watt xenlight ballast and dl50 bulb in a black 10 mcp costco thor ?

or squeeze it into a vector spotlight or something ?

300 bucks seems ok for a hid thor I guess.

I bet more people would buy one at 250.00 or so.

a black hid thor would sell better.

I am going to show this auction to my mom who owns my black hid thor.

And for $50 you can get a portable battery that the HS can use.

Actually, the battery that I got was only $30. And, someone else on this forum got that same battery for $15 somewhere else. Gives you over an hour of runtime.

I agree with the comments on the value of time and expertise. For many of us on the list making an HID Thor is simple, but most people have no idea how to do this. I just did a 50w Thor mod for a friend who just does not have the time or desire to learn about HID systems......where you buy parts, what reasonable prices are, how you might stuff the thing into a flashlight, which flashlight has a useable reflector, compatible power supply, how to wire it up, etc. Now if I were selling this light on ebay I would certainly expect to make a decent profit.

All of that said, I think it that it might have been in the seller's best interests to have explained in the auction description that this is a stock flashlight that has been heavily modified. The risk in not doing so is that the buyer might see a stock Thor after the sale, perhaps feel he got a bad deal, and then slam the seller with bad feedback.

p.s. I have a Matsushita ballast that is about three times the size of an Auerswald ballast and I don't think it would fit inside a Thor. There are some big ballasts out there!

I was the first bidder on this light, and received this from the seller after asking for the brand name:

"It was originally a Thor, with an hid kit conversion installed by me. Both are brand new."

I've since found this web site, ordered me up a Thor and am reading & researching the best way to cobble up an HID unit. I'm also keeping an eye out on Ebay for bulb/ballast packages. I'll keep on reading this forum, and any other resources you kind people could send my way would be much appreciated.
