Hi folks, newbie flashlight maniac here.

I just got the Energizer tactical 1 watt LED from Target. Because of a pricing error in the store I was able to get it for $11.99 before tax, which seems like a pretty good deal. I couldn't find the exact model online. This one here:

http://www.opticsplanet.net/picture-1-energizer-energi-to-go-ipod-battery-charger-aud4cgr.html

has a model code of "MLT1W2AAL". However the one I purchased had a different color package and came with alkaline batteries, and has a model code of "MLT1W2AAE". I assume the "L" at the end means lithium, and "E" for Energizer alkaline (?).

I chose to go with the 1 watt over the 3 watt because of the pricing error making it nice and cheap. But another reasons was that for my purposes I did not need an extra bright flashlight. So after that long boring preamble, here is my question:

All other things being equal (battery type, etc.) will my 1 watt energizer flashlight last 3 times longer than the 3 watt model? My intuition says yes, but maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks!

I think that would be true but it depends on how they're driving the led so its possible. But luxeon Is and IIIs are only about 1/3 of the efficiancy of modern generation leds like Cree, Seoul, and luxeon rebel leds which means that using the same power as you "1 watt" flashlight, it will put out 3x more light. this of course render watt ratings useless so its best to forget about them.
warning: The longer your here, you wallet may seem to be getting thinner, but thats just because you can see it better with all you new flashlights! :broke:

Thanks for the responses.

Yeah, I heard about that. For this particular flashlight I wasn't too concerned with having a lot of light output. In fact I currently cover the end with tissue paper to further dim/diffuse the light. So in the store I decided to go with the lowest power to get the most life out of the batteries. However, I didn't want to go much smaller in flashlight body size that two AA. (Also the pricing error at Target made this particular model a definite must-buy!)

:laughing:Haha, I'll try to be careful. Finances are a bit tight right now, but once things turn around I'll be looking for that perfect super bright flashlight!

First off, forget the "watt" thing(if you haven't already), the current gen LEDs at 1 watt(actual) can outshine the last gen LEDs at 3 watts.

To answer your question, according to what I've read, the "1 watt" does run longer then the "3 watt" one.

Next stop, Seoul mod.

Welcome! I would like to suggest that you consider running them on NiMH rechargeable (preferably low self discharge). Lithium primaries can be expensive even with buying them online. Definitely do not use alkalines.

Thanks! I have banished thoughts of watts from my mind. ;-) I also have the NiMH batteries charged and ready to go once the alkalines it came with run out.

It may not be the latest and greatest LED flashlight but you can't be unhappy with the price I got it for.
