Hi guys- Im new to the forum, but have been reading for a while and find flashlights-both regular and led very cool. I must say the mods some of you do are amazing. Now that said...What are your thoughts on the potential of the engergizer double barrel 8AA for led mods?

High. Very high potential. However I think you are restricted to 5mm leds for mods. Not the luxeon stars. Simply put, the head is plastic, not a good conductor of heat. You could go with an array of 20 5mm LEDs? Maybe more? Run time on 8 AAs (actually 4 in parallel) would be long. Really long. Drive them on a 400 ma regultion circuit and you should have a light that last for 10 hours of full brightness. Another 50 hours of diminishing light. Hmm... sounds great to me, except for the cost and the horror of soldering 20 5mm LEDs.

yea
i did try soldering around 13 leds and then stop right there because it was really tedious. Moreover, you will always increase the risk of bad connection and burning the led for each led that you add. However, If you succeed, you will be very satisfied with the output, provided you are using high quality leds for that of course. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Are there any type of generic breadboard setups that might allow putting an array and regulation without extensive soldering? Even with 10 leds, I could get a pretty bright flashlight with a great run time. Is $17.95 for one and 2 for $29.95 a reasonable price for a 'donor' flashlight?

Welcome to the forum Zman,
I think the energizer DB light is great for led mods. I myself have an 8aa version that I modded with a Luxeon star. Got the idea from here(he's a forum member with some awesome ls mods)
also check here for more energizer db mods. hope this help, and good luck with the mod.

how bright is the Energizer Bouble Barrel 8 AA cell mod with LS led?I believe it is the 1 watt, right? Did mod my 250 000 CP spot light to a 48 white led.But the output is disappointing cause using lousy led.Don't know the type or brand.Spent about $100 and a few hour of sleep for several days.Imagine soldering 48 leds and resistors on the pcb.
