Has anybody ever tried engraving lights, and what issues did you encounter?

I'm not sure I have the equipment to do it myself and also, whether there are any problems cutting through the HA3. It would be nice to cut a custom message or name on the light as a truly special gift for someone. Thoughts on whether a message or the recipient's name is more suitable are welcome too.

I was all set up to engrave an BE2 Balrog body that I bought specially for the project of putting some vine and leaf engraving and covered with gold (Bonanza kit)
The reason for the Balrog body is that is clean with no lettering.
Hard anodizing type III don't cling to edges well, that was my main aprehension.
Unfortunately I can not find my old gravers!!!
If you read a book on how to engrave firearms you will have the basic and advanced techniques explained.
Good luck with your project.

KevinL,

I'm quite keen on laser engraving which has numerous merits but I would shy away from conventional engraving using a drill.

I've seen lots of attempts by different folks to engrave using a drill and most seem poorly done and leave you with the impression that it ruined rather than enhanced the light.

My own attempts at engraving have all ended with poor results. Yes the light was made less enticing to theft (which was the purpose) but it also made the item unsaleable if I ever wanted to get rid of the light! IMHO unless you have access to someone who can laser engrave your chosen light don't do it!

Thanks guys... I figured as much, short of a laser, nothing is going to touch those Surefires. I wouldn't trust a drill. The challenge is now finding someone with a suitable setup that's near me....
