After reading so many stories of unprepared people made me realize one mistake I made pre-CPF. About 20 years ago I did the Half Dome hike in Yosemite. I was coming down and at the Little Yosemite camp I met this German couple who was turning around because of how late in the day it was, it was around 3pm. At that point you still have about a 2 hour march to get to the top. Not to mention this is the most strenous portion of the hike. I convinced them to finish the trip saying "You didn't travel half way around the globe to be denied!" My primary light was a AAA Mag and my backup was a chem glostick. They did not have a flashlight. So I gave them my glostick and they marched on. That night back at camp I realized I really gave them some bad advice and even worse illumination. Those 6" sticks at the time were not all that bright.

To this day I often wondered how they faired on the trip down. They must curse my name everytime they remember their ill fated hike.

They may have had a romantic encounter during the hike that may have resulted in them having a life affirming and beautiful child.

As for bad advice, I am sure at some point my advice was less than stellar but if you do your best at the time with the facts available you can't beat yourself up, plus advice doesn't have to be followed.:p

Depending on the weather they might not have had such a bad hike. Fully dark adapted vision is an amazing thing although certainly can be stressful to hike around for many people using just that.

..or they might have dipped the end of the glowstick in oil and set it on fire, in which case it would have been brighter than your Solitaire :candle:

I once told someone here on CPF that their 4-D incan camping lantern can easily convert to LED with a PR LED drop in :ohgeez::shakehead

I once told someone not to listen to beam... nevermore ;)

I'm pretty sure most of us are guilty (to some extent) of offering some silly advices when we thought we knew what we were talking about only to discover at a later stage in life that we didn't really know what we thought we knew LOL.

Never given someone bad lighting related advice, but some of my advice has gotten overly complex on occasion.

Sadly enough, this can also happen when I'm giving advice to myself...

Handed a fellow dog walking owner a Mini-M@g [stock] during late Dec. afternoon trail walk. Never saw that owner again...... or the MM. Does that constitute "bad" advice???

Only if that walker is still out there because the light failed and he/she never found the way back home.

Cheers

Rest assuredly they got home safely, ever read about the "lost german couple" in the local papers? ;)
Worst case scenario, they have cursed your name over a beer in their hometown.
Best case scenario, they are greatly appreciative of your advice to continue so as to complete that which they started.

I once told someone that if their "3.7v" battery charger was putting out 4.2 volts it must be broken :ohgeez:
That was way back in the day...

Thanks and welcome to CPF!

I listened to myself and got married to my first wife. When we divorced she took my much prized Chevy truck and it had my mag light in it. Does this count?
