Sold/Expired === Exotic Coating Service Update ===

I got all my exotics back, and will take some photos soon. I know there were problems and delays, but now that am looking at the end result, it is spectacular and beyond my expectations. I am just thrilled at the quality, and would not hesitate to enter another Exotic Coating run should Jonathan ever want to do this again.

Jonathan,

The two spy's you did are perfect. Thank you so much for offering this service. In a few weeks I will get this 007 built up and take some pics of it.

I too kicked in a little to help cover the lost parts. 🙁

Cheers
Dave

HAIKU IS HOME!!!!!!!!!!!

My haiku returned safely today.

Not sure I entirely knew what to expect, but the "grippiness" of the AlTiN was not it. I like the feel better than raw Ti.

I really don't mind the light coating in the deepest groove, kind of a nice contrast.

There is one small smudge in the color on the head, but you have to be looking for it. Just glancing at it and it's not noticeable.

All-in-all I'm happy.

Thanks again, Jonathan

I started assembling another light today and found a small problem. The threads on the head end of the body were polished so much that.... well, they no longer exist. If I wiggle it just right, the body slides all the way into the head without having to screw it in. The light is ruined.

I'd remained reasonably patient and positive through this whole process. Now I'm a little annoyed. The shop received full price and I and got:
- one part lost by shop (replaced by Jonathan  and volutarily reimbursed by me)
- most electrical cleanup requested not done (not a big deal)
- two parts with terrible finishes (one was a funky substrate though)
- one full light wrong coating
- one part coated, wasn't supposed to be
- one light destroyed

Mostly not Jonathan's fault, it kills me to complain at all after he put in this massive effort, and I know complaining won't change anything.

Regardless, this shop does not deserve full payment for the results I received. :scowl:

You're not kidding! What was the final cost if you replaced all the parts to just undo the damage they did from misplacing, miscoating and overpolishing?

I understand from the way everyone is speaking that we're all very grateful that Jonathan has undertaken this massive task, but as a relatively new CPF member (2006), I really took as an assumption that Jonathan had a professional relationship with the machine shop he is using.

All of his posts have rightly been focused on getting the situation rectified, but what I'd really like to know is, what happened? I know they mixed up the parts by grouping them together and they lost one set, but they also seem to have done an obviously terrible job on some items also.

I mean, there had been multiple previous successful runs: Are these the same guys used on previous runs? What was their explanation of how the parts went missing? Was there not some sort of contract/understanding that if things went wrong, they would rectify the situation? What the heck did they say when Jonathan brought to their attention parts that were done completely wrong after he carefully identified/sorted them, or did that conversation not even happen?

I can't help but feel that we're missing an opportunity to put some pressure on this shop to rectify this situation, as I get the feeling (probably just through lack of communication) that Jonathan is letting them off VERY lightly...!

Below is how 5 out of the 6 Surefire Z41's I sent in turned out. The coating was very thin/ transparent on the tail caps. I have a KT-4 head that turned out 10 times worse than this tail cap. The coverage is very splotchy and very thin/ transparent in most places.

I received my AlTiN PD-S back the other day. It looks phenomenal. See for yourself:

The only problem is I'm missing my Ti clip. I actually sent two clips, one with this light and one with my now orange mule. They were both supposed to get the AlTiN treatment. I'm missing both of them, but I'm hoping some kind soul may have received them with their order. If you received either of the clips, please let me know by PM. This light looks great, but somewhat incomplete without a clip.

Jonathan, any chance they're in some hidden ziplock bag at your shop? Thanks again for doing this run. I know it hasn't been easy, but the results look great.

Finally I received my parts today.
The coatings look great but unluckely I'm missing some small but essential parts too.

edit: Ok, Jonathan sent another package these days. Hope all the rest comes in and I'm saved by the bell.

Thanks!

I'm angry.

After 10+ months of waiting I finally received a package back from Jonathan. Except for the previously noted missing nickel PD piston, all parts are present. Here's my list per modamag:

list.JPG

NONE of my Ti lights or parts have been polished. Each and every one still has the exact same scuffs, scratches, dents and burrs they had before. Polishing was supposed to be included, stated by modamag to be a benefit to the plating process, and was specifically requested by me! And that's not the worst... my LT27 bezel, LunaSol27 head, and all the knife pocket clips have been bead blasted. Bead blasting wasn't listed as an available service. I HATE bead blasting. Never asked for it. I won't buy a light with it.

WTH?!

And far from the reduced friction attributed to these Ti coatings, they all feel more grippy or sticky than uncoated Ti. So much for that "feature".
Also, the HA coatings have noticeable pitting in spots.

I can safely say that this has been a COMPLETE FAILURE. I would prefer every one of these lights and tools as they were before, without exception. PERIOD.

StrayLight, your frustration is understood, but please do not allow it to spill over into bad language. I've made 3 minor changes to your post, and this does not lessen its impact.

Understood, but "annoyed" doesn't begin to describe how I feel about this mess. I edited my post again.
On the remote chance that my LunaSol27 head and LT27 bezel might be someone else's (I know the pocket clips are mine, they were the only ones in the lot), does anyone have un-blasted versions that do not belong to them?

Does anyone want to trade for a blasted AlTiN LS27 head or a blasted TiCN LT27 bezel?

Anyone else not get their stuff polished, get the wrong treatments, or have other problems? I know there were other problems mentioned, but anyone else have it this bad?

I can't even imagine how upset I would be in your shoes, and I do think all of us understand, but just don't know what else to say.

I did have excellent results on all of my 24K Gold coated lights, but I suspect it was a function of them being in "like new" condition, and that gold coating process being thicker.

The two SS Jetbeam clone AA lights I sent for TiN coating did have a number of superficial, normal use scuffs/scratches that were clearly not polished out before TiN, as they are still just as visible--but not unacceptable. In retrospect, I wish I had also asked them to be 24K Gold plated.

In the scope of my overall order, and having seen the more significant problems such as yours, I am happier with the results than I expected to be. Have you called Jonathan?

This thread seems so deathly silent about this mess. Can anyone explain how this machine shop got away with ruining so many beautiful lights, with full pay? How can we avoid this in the future? IS IT TOO LATE TO DO SOMETHING?? *wonders if voice echoes into vast nothingness*
