I had a crazy thought... if the battery case of the Fenix L1D-CE could be extended by about a quarter of an inch, I would think you could fit two of the CBP750AA cells inside.
These are 1.2 volt NiMH cells are rated for 750mah. You won't get the runtime that you can from a single NiMH AA cell, but with two cells in series you should get a brighter turbo mode from the higher voltage. It would be like a short version of the L2D-CE.
It has an advantage over using a 14500 li-ion cell. The low modes should still work just fine. There's also a CBP300AA cell, which is a half AA. Two of those should fit without modification, but the capacity looks really low.
