Well, after seeing the forecast of 3 to 5 inches of rain and strong winds...I guess I'll vote to cancel for Thursday. I was hoping the rain would be a morning thing, and clear out during the day. Unless the forecast changes- it looks like heavy rain all day and evening.
The pavilion is at Kittle field on the map. It's on the road back to the group camp site.

Hi guys, I agree with Bill, the weather reports for Thursday are bad! Good news is rest of weekend looks great! I'm looking into trying to swap Thursday night for Sunday night. I'll post as soon as I have more info.

With this, you can turn off the talking heads on television, use your noggin, and predict the weather yourself. I find it much more fun to glance here and decide for yourself.

http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php

It defaults to the west coast, so, you need to slide the bar over.

But I agree, for the Hudson Valley it is saying 50 MPH gusts...

I don't think NJ will be much different.

I was planning on buying a tent today; it would be a heck of a way to test its weatherproof-ness...from the radar, looks like two separate fronts, the first one, and Tropical Depression 16.

EDIT: They are calling for Tropical Depression 16 to merge with the northerly front. Cool on its own merits, but not so cool for camping. Let's keep an eye on that radar map!

And-

please keep us posted regarding the camping schedule.

🙂

Guys, all forecasts are saying Thursday is going to be heavy rain and strong winds all day. I'm not going to go on Thursday at all. I'm planning on arriving about noon on Friday - based on the weather. The current weather reports are saying that the rain will be ending early Friday. I'm looking into trying to swap Thursday night for Sunday night. Stay tuned for more updates shortly.

IMPORTANT - I just got off the phone with Stokes, and they were great! They allowed me to swap Thursday night for Sunday night at no charge! I'm sorry for anyone who was planning on arriving on Thursday, but the weather is going to be really bad. Good news is that the rest of the weekend weather looks great!! Now anyone who wants to stay over Sunday night can. For those who can not stay over Sunday night, at least you don't have to rush out for a 12:00 checkout on Sunday. As for Friday - please do not arrive before 1:00 - silly I know, but that is their check in policy, and they have been good to us so far and I don't want to push it. Due to the weather, I think I made the right call swapping Thursday for Sunday, I hope you all agree.

Just to be sure I understand:

We cannot camp Thursday day or evening - as in not allowed on the premises.

We can arrive anytime after 1pm on Friday.

We have all day Sunday and can sleep over Sunday night and would have to be out by noon on Monday.

I think it was the right decision. Although I can't sleep there Sunday night, I will stay into the evening on Sunday. Thanks for your efforts, and see you late afternoon/early evening Friday. 😀

EDIT: Holy flashlights! Look at that radar map in the link I posted above. We are looking at a loooooooooooooooooong line of storms, marching right up the coast. I'm looking forward to watching it—

from my living room window.

Hi Stan, yes you are correct. Loosing Thursday stinks, I even took a day off from work, but the weather on Thursday was just going to be too bad to camp. 4" of rain and 45 mph wind gusts - not camping weather at all. So I opted to swap thursday for sunday. The good news is that it should end Friday morning, and be really nice for the rest of the weekend and thru Monday as well.

I've been holding off posting as I wasn't sure if I was going to make it....not like the last time I got all excited, paid and then couldn't show up.:shakehead

Well It's official..I'm still not sure if I can make it 😕.

There's a small chance I might be able to swing by on Sunday afternoon into the evening but I just wanted to swing by and say  anyway.

I think that was a nice exchange (ditching the rainy day in favor of a sunny day) and I will most likely take advantage of it. Good idea, Tim. Thanks.:twothumbs

I am hoping to be able to pick my son up from college in Newark at 4pm Friday and then head straight for Stokes.:poof:

And on Monday, pack up and leave in the morning to have him back home in time to get cleaned up and to school for his 2:30 pm class.:twak:

It looks like I won't be able to make it, which is really disappointing to me.
Looks like from Friday afternoon on will be perfect weather, which always makes camping more enjoyable. Hope you all have a great time.

I sware, being a weatherman is the biggest joke of a job! I understand that predicting weather isn't an exact science, but come on, at least get close.

So it appears that this storm has slowed down and is arriving later than predicted, and will therefore be leaving later. While the original forcast called for the sun to be out late Friday morning, now it may continue to rain thru the afternoon.

I'm going to keep a close eye on the weather in Branchville, NJ (Stokes State Forest), and figure out when I'll be headding up there. I'm surely not going to head up there if it's still raining. I don't want to set my tent up in the rain, so I'm going to wait it out. They are still calling for very nice and clear weather once this storm pulls out. ...stay tuned.

Those camping cabins are starting to look good! I'm still coming in the afternoon even if it still is raining a bit. That pavilion might be good for awhile!

Crap, guys... I have to skip it. Much as I've been trying to deny it to myself, even to the point of paying Tim a few days ago, a confluence of factors over the last couple weeks is absolutely screaming at me that I can't, and honestly shouldn't try to go anywhere this weekend. Too much going on prior, during, and after, and all money right now (like practically every friggin' dime) needs to go toward other things.

There was a lot about my first FCW that I was looking forward to, including entertaining ya'll with some music. I'll be sure to have my ducks in a row for the next one.

Hope to see lots of FCW-7 pics, and commentary!

I woke up at two A.M. with a minor sore throat, feeling kind of lousy. When I fell back asleep, I felt much improved. I am going to play this one by ear. After work today, if I feel better, I will definitely come. However, if I feel worse, I may have to cancel. 🙁 <--Big frowny face

🙂 I'm headding up soon - with a target arrival around 3:00pm -4pm. See you guys then.

PS - I just checked the weather again, and it says once this storm pulls out (around 2pm), we will have great weather thru Tuesday, with no rain in the forcast! Which is typical of a system like this, it should pull all the rain and moisture out of the area with it, leaving us with low humidity and no rain for a few days.
